About the Role

Gain real world experience as an Intern in Matson's Risk Management Department. The internship pay rate is $25/hour. This position requires the successful candidate to work in-office at our Walnut Creek Corporate Office at least three days per week.

What you'll do:

  • Partner with the Senior Risk Manager to modernize, enhance, and streamline the Certificate of Insurance (COI) process by transitioning to a fully electronic workflow, including improving request intake, submission review, and compliance tracking within Origami Risk (Origami), our Risk Management Information System (RMIS).
  • Update and maintain vendor COI requirements on Origami
  • Review insurance binders and policies to validate premium payments.
  • Conduct the annual insurance policy audit to verify all policies have been accurately issued, and upload finalized policies into Origami.
  • Assist with collection of underwriting renewal data, scheduling meetings and assisting with special projects as assigned by the Director or other members of the Risk Management department.
  • Learn to review certificates and negotiate deficiencies with internal departments and external brokers and vendors.
  • Enter, validate, and audit claims data in Origami to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve training materials for claims system operations and claims handling procedures.

You have these skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Self-motivated with strong written and verbal communication skills.

And these qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or vocational program. With a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Job Training includes:

  • One-on-one training with our Director of Risk Management on insurance coverages.
  • Origami database review.
  • Vessel tours.
  • Planned tour of insurance broker's San Francisco office.

The hourly rate is posted for this position in California.
