Job Description

The University of Southern California Libraries seek a Temporary Resource Employee to work at USC Libraries. This Temporary Resource Employee will report to the Head of Grand Library and Print Management at USC Libraries. The primary responsibilities will be to inventory, shift and relocate library collections between various locations. The Resource Employee must possess strong communication skills, be well-organized and detail-oriented, be able to work independently and as part of a team and collaborate well in the realization of complex projects. This person must be able to lift collections in various sized containers weighing up to 99-pounds. A successful candidate for this position will have an educational and work experience that will allow them to successfully perform the required job duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Responsible for driving USC vehicles to transport crates and boxes of library collections in various sized containers weighing up to 99-pounds. Deliveries and pick-ups will happen between multiple library locations, and off-campus locations. This includes the loading and unloading of materials, carrying collections and moving them using dollies, booktrucks or flatbeds.
  • Maintain accurate statistics on the volume of materials moved and track items to ensure timely delivery and customer service. Prepares and updates reports associated with the collections being moved.
  • Conducts inventories, arranges materials and details unorganized collections within established guidelines and/or under supervision. Performs intricate searches through online and physical files for unusual and specialized materials, and resolves any complex problems found. Consults with supervisor to make recommendations that may lead to necessary changes to policies and/or procedures.
  • Monitors the library's shelves and physical organization for neatness and necessary shifting. Maintains and supervises the flow of loading and shelving library collections, and makes note of problem sections.
  • Attends staff meetings Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

The Temporary Resource Employee position is a full-time staff position and will last for approximately 3-months. Work will take place in multiple USC Libraries locations on and near the University Park Campus and will require local travel.

Experience & Qualifications

Minimum Education: Associate's degree, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience: 2 years

Minimum Field of Expertise: CA License and 2 years driving experience. Thorough knowledge of general library operations, and working knowledge of standard bibliographic and other reference tools. Understanding of library databases, cataloging rules and procedures, and Library of Congress standards. Aptitude for detail and accuracy.

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree

Preferred Experience:

Preferred Field Expertise: Proficiency with library management software/systems. Experience in higher education and/or library environments, and with handling archival materials. Bilingual in English and Spanish, with written and verbal proficiency. Some knowledge of basic web server functions, networking, file system maintenance, HTML and web editing tools.

The hourly rate for this position is $26.00.
