Position Overview
| Primary Purpose of Position |
The primary purpose of this position is to expand the College of Engineering's capacity to communicate its mission, research and impact through strategic, high-quality storytelling and content creation.
This role will plan, write and produce a wide range of materials, including feature stories, news releases, social media campaigns, and multimedia content, that showcase the achievements of faculty, students and alumni.
By enhancing the college's presence across digital and traditional platforms, the position will play a key role in strengthening brand identity, increasing public engagement, and supporting recruitment, fundraising and partnership efforts. |

Assist the College of Engineering's Director of Communications with performing a range of writing functions; developing and maintaining good working relationships with faculty, staff, students, department chairs, and center and institute directors; and working with the College's Dean to strategically advance the reputation of the College.
Ability to demonstrate a methodical and logical approach to visual/social communications (use of cameras/smartphone). Ability to use innovative solutions for effective communication to promote research, students, faculty and staff. Strong writing and editing skills for web, social media, and newsletters; Experience with social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc.); Knowledge of content management systems (WordPress, Cascade, etc.); Basic graphic design skills (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva); Basic video editing and multimedia production skills (Premiere Pro, Final Cut, etc.); other skills include Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, email marketing platforms, analytics

Assist the College of Engineering's Director of Communications with collaborating with University communications staff to coordinate coverage of
COE research and other accomplishments; approving photos and illustrations to accompany articles; and assisting with drafting and editing opinion pieces and expert commentary from the Dean and faculty members.
Project management skills needed for this role include but are not limited to content planning, editorial calendars, time management and coordination of stakeholder interviews, work flow production.
This role will also be responsible for newsletter and magazine development and website content development and management.
Planning, executing, and overseeing communication initiatives such as newsletters, announcements and flyers to ensure they meet strategic goals and deadlines.

Assist the College of Engineering's Director of Communications with developing and managing communications media and marketing materials of the College; attending and chronicling College events, people, and publications; composing and submitting news releases and articles; maintaining an indexed repository of photos, videos, press releases and articles; and producing marketing materials and distributing strategically via a wide range of platforms.
Oral: Ability to convey information orally to individuals or groups to ensure they understand the message. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to information from others.
The Communications Specialist needs strong speaking and listening skills to work well with others. They will regularly interview faculty, students, and alumni to gather information for stories, and must be able to explain ideas clearly and ask the right questions. They also need to work with different departments, give updates on projects, and represent the communications team in meetings or when talking to media and partners. Being able to speak professionally, listen carefully, and communicate clearly is key to success in this role.
Written: must be a strong writer who can create clear, engaging, and accurate content for a variety of audiences. This includes writing news stories, website copy, social media posts, newsletters, and promotional materials. They need to translate complex engineering topics into easy-to-understand language, while maintaining a professional and consistent tone. Attention to grammar, spelling, and style is essential, as well as the ability to follow branding and editorial guidelines.
