This position provides environmental permitting and compliance support to generating facilities and other company operations to ensure they are compliant with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and aligned with corporate environmental policies and procedures. Expertise required in the areas of industrial wastewater, surface water discharge, stormwater, and water withdrawal permitting and regulatory framework. Serves as an environmental subject matter expert and provides technical expertise and judgment to resolve basic environmental issues. Assists in investigations which include analyzing and interpreting trends and prepares technical documents on results. Conducts trend analyses, incident investigations for assigned function. Collaborates with environmental and business operations partners in permit applications and renewals. Maintains current knowledge on environmental laws and regulations and a working knowledge of technical aspects of regulatory requirements. Supports the evaluation of proposed and existing standards, regulations, and guidelines to assess the impact on company programs and facility operations; assists in comments to regulatory authorities. Works with and under the guidance of experienced team members, using established procedures, to support technical growth.

This is the intermediate level of the EHS Consulting classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems, in environmental, health, and / or safety areas of specialization, with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied. (NOTE: This position may serve as the entry level for individuals who have acquired a college degree with comparable experience external to the company, or for individuals who have acquired a Masters Degree in in an EHS field.)

Responsibilities
  • Serves as subject matter expert for basic technical program and compliance issues and supports company's environmental goals, strategies, programs, and processes. Supports the development and maintenance of procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental laws and regulations. Assists with tracking regulatory changes, legislative activities, and industry standards. Under direction, works with federal, state, and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy participation on various internal/external industry committees and teams.

  • Provide basic regulatory-required and internal environmental reports. Assists with assigned environmental training programs.

  • With guidance prepare, submit and negotiate permits and permit renewals with federal, state and local authorities. Communicate permit requirements to facilities. Works with other EHS Professionals and facility personnel to update various facility plans and documents that require knowledge and experience while minimizing impacts to operational activities.

  • Works with others to support accomplishment of work unit goals and enhance company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communicating, and scheduling of environmental work activities. Works with others to support the department's routine and special projects to accomplish business objectives.

  • Strives to continually develop and improve job-related, technical knowledge and skill to ensure that department expectations are met.

  • Develops positive working relationships with peers, customers, employees and management to effectively complete work activities.

Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years related work experience along with

  • Bachelors degree in Science, Health and Safety, Engineering oar other related field of study

  • In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) listed above long with 3 years related work experience, High School Diploma/GED AND 7 year(s) related work experience

Desired Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Business or

  • Masters degree in Other Related Degree or

  • Masters degree in Science or

  • Masters degree in Engineering or

  • Masters degree in Health and Safety

  • In addition to desired degree, 3 years related work experience

  • Professional Engineer and/or Project Management Professional and/or CSP and/or QEP and/or CHMM and/or CIH
