The Senior Manager of Emergency Department Coding will be responsible for overseeing the coding functions for both facility and professional services to ensure accuracy, compliance, and optimal reimbursement. This role is critical as it covers multiple MGB Emergency Departments, which collectively handle around 500,000 visits annually. This role requires deep expertise in Emergency Department coding guidelines, CPT/HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and payer-specific requirements for both facility and professional billing, trauma and critical care coding.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of coders for facility and professional services.
- Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with federal/state regulations and payer guidelines.
- Oversee coding audits, quality assurance processes, and ongoing staff education.
- Collaborate with clinical, billing, and compliance teams to resolve coding-related issues.
- Monitor KPIs, productivity, and denial trends to optimize revenue cycle performance.
- Stay current with regulatory changes, coding updates, and industry best practices.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or related field of study required

Licenses and Credentials

  • RHIA, RHIT, CPC, COC, or CCS certification; advanced credentials are preferred.

Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive coding experience required

  • 2+ years in a leadership role preferred

  • Strong knowledge of outpatient facility and professional surgical coding guidelines.

  • Proven track record in team leadership, process improvement, and compliance oversight.

  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with individuals at all levels, including patients, visitors, and staff.

  • Extensive knowledge of coding systems, including ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and DRG.

  • Strong understanding of coding guidelines, conventions, and industry regulations.

  • In-depth knowledge of revenue cycle management, billing processes, and healthcare reimbursement methodologies.

  • Familiarity with coding software and technology, such as encoder systems and computer-assisted coding (CAC) tools.

  • Excellent leadership and management skills with the ability to motivate and develop coding staff.

Working Schedule:

  • Remote, M-F eastern standard business hours. Requires a quiet, secure, HIPAA-compliant workstation
