ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY ENGINEER (CRANE SAFETY) The Sr. Crane Safety Engineer supports SpaceX's business operations team by providing company level oversight of crane, rigging, and heavy equipment program development and implementation. They provide content updates for training programs focused on safety and employee adherence to company policy. The Sr. Crane Safety Engineer is based in Starbase, Texas while supporting all sites with heavy equipment. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement crane safety programs, including policies, procedures, and training modules for operators, riggers, and other personnel involved in crane operations
- Support the overall leadership team with inputs for strategic planning for efficient critical lifting operations
- Advise SpaceX asset procurement strategy for heavy equipment to ensure the required capability and capacity are available based on the required work scope per site
- Train and certify crane operators, signal persons, and riggers on safe operating practices, emergency procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Investigate crane-related incidents, accidents, or near-misses, prepare detailed reports with root cause analysis and recommendations for preventive measures
- Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure cranes are properly maintained, calibrated, and modified as needed for safe performance
- Stay updated on industry regulations, best practices, and technological advancements in crane safety, and recommend updates to organizational protocols accordingly
- Review and provide technical expertise feedback lift plans and critical lifts plans as needed
- Provide on-site guidance during complex lifts, ensuring adherence to lift plans, signaling protocols, and safety zones
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, training, incidents, and compliance documentation for audits and regulatory reviews
- Conduct routine and non-routine audits of crane operations across the organization
- Promote a culture of safety by conducting safety audits, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns focused on crane operations
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree
- 5+years of experience as a lift director
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- 10+ years of experience as a certified advanced rigger
- Industry leader in crane operations, rigging equipment and their applications
- Experience leading safety briefings for critical/high consequence operations
- Experience with preventative maintenance of equipment as well as equipment installations
- Experience with continuous process improvement and implementation of new methods for creating improved efficiencies in business operations highly preferred
- Ability to calculate and determine appropriate lifting equipment and write lift plans
- Strong working knowledge of lifting signals and communications
- Strong working knowledge of operating and inspecting heavy equipment
- Organized and self-driven capable of working independently with little direction
- Demonstrate innovative and futuristic thinking to drive continuous improvement
- Able to multi-task and be detail oriented while also working within time constraints and deadlines
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This is not a remote or hybrid position and will require relocation if not already local to the Brownsville, TX area
- Must be willing to travel to other SpaceX locations when requested
- Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed; flexibility is required
- Willing to respond to emergencies to support priority projects, missions, and launches
