Spectra Tech, Inc. is hiring for a Structural Engineer-HFIR in Oak Ridge, TN. Apply Today! Background

The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) is preparing for an extended outage in late 2028 to replace the reactor beryllium reflector. This effort requires complete disassembly of all instruments in the thermal beam room and the neutron guide network.

To leverage the opportunity provided by the HBRR project, a series of neutron instrument projects will be executed to expand and improve the neutron science program at HFIR. These improvements include:

  • Expansion of the existing Cold Guide Hall (CGH, Building 7972) to provide additional neutron instrument and laboratory space and a more favorable instrument suite layout
  • Redesign and replacement of the CGH neutron guide systems, common vacuum systems, and common radiation shielding to add two additional neutron beamlines (increasing from four to six), improve layout, and enhance radiation shielding
  • Various individual instrument improvements in the CGH and thermal beam room

This scope is currently in the early engineering phase.

Position Summary

A Structural Engineer is needed on a subcontract basis to perform and support engineering activities associated with the HBRR instrument improvement projects.

The position will report to the HBRR Level 2 Manager for the thermal beam room and CGH instrument scope and will interface with project leadership, reactor engineering staff, instrument engineering staff, and other subject matter experts.

  • Contribute to defining engineering requirements for instrument projects to ensure compliance with structural codes, standards, and applicable DOE requirements
  • Perform structural calculations, including floor loading and seismic analyses
  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs for radiation shielding
  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs for equipment mounting systems, equipment trenches, and structural/equipment wall and floor anchors
  • Collaborate with rigging subject matter experts to develop lift plans for existing and new equipment
  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs for equipment access platforms, stairways, and mezzanines
  • Develop demolition and construction plans
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
  • Familiarity with applicable structural codes and standards
  • Ability to receive access to export-controlled documentation under applicable rules
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering
