John Michael Kohler Arts Center 2026 Summer Internships

Position Summary

Are you passionate about library sciences or collections management and looking to gain hands-on experience archiving visual resources? Are you passionate about art and music? Do you enjoy event planning and working with the public? Are you passionate about performing arts? Do you enjoy working behind the scenes at a musical, dance, or theatrical performance? Are you passionate about visual and performing art and teaching? The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is seeking Interns to join our dynamic teams for the summer.


SPECIAL EVENTS INTERNSHIP

What You will Do

  • Assist with planning, setting up, trouble shooting, and managing facility rentals and special events
  • Assist with preparation and execution of all Arts Center special events, including Levitt Amp Music Series throughout the summer, the Midsummer Festival of the Arts in mid-July, and the Art Center's participation in 4th of July parade
  • Organize and order supplies; maintain inventories
  • Complete research related to special events and rentals, as directed
  • Interface with the public and deliver exceptional customer service to a wide variety of clientele
  • Provide general administrative support to the Special Events Coordinator


Who You Are

  • A current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in art administration, marketing, communications, museum studies, business, or a related field
  • Experienced working in a customer service-related field
  • Strong written and verbal communicator with an eye for detail
  • Interested in art, music, museums, and cultural or nonprofit organizations.
  • Organized, adaptable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment; able to quickly solve problems
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to acquire Wisconsin bartender license
  • Have a valid Driver's License and ability to work with us at our nearby locations/events



EDUCATION INTERNSHIP

What You will Do

  • Develop exhibition-related art-making activities for K - 12 field trips, summer camps, Midsummer Festival of the Arts, and/or the Social STUDIO
  • Write new tours and tour activities for K - 12 field trips
  • Support Education programming at key events throughout the summer, including working in the activity's tents at our Thursday night concert series and Midsummer Festival of the Arts AND working in the Social STUDIO
  • Provide general administrative support to the Education team as needed


Who You Are

  • A current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in museum studies, K - 12 education, studio art, performing art, communications, or a related field
  • You have prior experience and interest in working with children, preferably in an arts-based setting
  • A strong written and verbal communicator; organized and adaptable
  • Comfortable and experienced working with the public and providing excellent customer service, particularly in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.



PERFORMING ARTS INTERNSHIP

What You will Do

  • Assist in the planning, marketing, and execution of our 10-week outdoor concert series
  • Develop auxiliary programming/outreach opportunities for artists to work with the public before or after performances
  • Collaborate with Arts Center staff, local/regional businesses, agents, and performers to book transportation, lodging, hospitality, etc.
  • Provide general administrative support to the Public Programs team as needed


Who You Are

  • A current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in arts administration, performing arts (dance, music, theatre), communications, or a related field
  • Able to communicate effectively and comfortably with many constituencies, including: coworkers, Arts Center patrons, agents, and performing artists
  • A strong written and verbal communicator; organized and adaptable
  • Experienced providing excellent customer service, particularly in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • You have had some prior experience and interest in event promotion, logistics, and/or planning in the performing arts. (Preferred)
  • Have a valid Driver's License and ability to work with us at our nearby locations/events



RESOURCE CENTER INTERNSHIP

What You will Do

  • Assist with preservation and processing of library and archival collections
  • Digitize photographic prints, slides, and documents
  • Assist with updates to image database
  • Catalog print materials and electronic resources
  • Provide general administrative support to Resource Center staff as needed


Who You Are

  • A current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in library science, museum collections, and/or archives management or related field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and independently on individual projects
  • Computer proficiency is a plus, with a working knowledge of Microsoft applications, Photoshop, and scanning software and hardware



DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

What You'll Do

  • Assist with donor and membership data maintenance, organization, and clean-up


  • Support accurate record-keeping within the Arts Center's donor database
  • Help prepare materials for mailings, acknowledgements, and stewardship efforts
  • Gain exposure to nonprofit data practices and development workflows
  • Assist with Development's presence at major public events, including the Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series and the Midsummer Festival of the Arts
  • Help staff and organize information booths alongside Development and Marketing teams
  • Welcome visitors, answer basic questions, and support membership and donor engagement efforts
  • Serve as a flexible extra set of hands, helping with setup, breakdown, organizing materials, carrying supplies, and acting as a runner as needed
  • Support behind-the-scenes event preparation, logistics, and follow-up


Who You Are

  • Interest in nonprofit work, the arts, fundraising, or data management
  • Comfort interacting with the public and representing the Arts Center in a welcoming, professional way
  • Strong attention to detail and a respect for accuracy and confidentiality
  • Willingness to jump in, problem-solve, and help where needed
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Reliability, flexibility, and a positive, grounded presence
  • Students or emerging professionals interested in arts administration, nonprofit management, data systems, communications, or community engagement are encouraged to apply



MARKETING INTERNSHIP

What You will Do

  • Create and assist with engaging content for social media, email newsletters, and website
  • Support marketing efforts for exhibitions, public programs, and special events
  • Draft and edit copy, assist with image editing, and organize digital marketing assets
  • Support on-site events through photography, videography, live posting, or visitor engagement
  • Provide general administrative support to the Marketing team as needed


Who You Are

  • A current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in marketing, communications, art history, museum studies, or a related field
  • A strong written and verbal communicator with an eye for detail
  • Interested in art, museums, and cultural or nonprofit organizations
  • Comfortable using social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Familiar with design tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite (a plus but not required)
  • Organized, adaptable, and able to juggle multiple projects.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to support/work with us at our nearby locations/events, Drivers License a plus



EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTIONS INTERNSHIP

What you will do

  • Assist with accessioning new objects into the Arts Center's permanent collection
  • Assisting with inventories and condition checks of items in preparation for exhibition
  • Provide support to the department by assisting with administrative tasks as assigned
  • Assist with Arts Center special events, including Midsummer Festival of the Arts July 18 & 19, Summer Concert Series, and the July 4 parade


Who you are

  • A strong interest in hands-on learning about current museum practice, collections care, information management, art handling, contemporary art, and/or self-taught art
  • Self-driven learner/experiencer, capable of multi-tasking and following directions, high attention to detail, and intentional in one's actions
  • Strong organizational and communication skills


  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, experience with databases or Pastperfect is a plus?
  • Occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions?



Summer 2026 Internship Dates

  • June 2 - August 21 (may be flexible)
  • 29 hours a week (will include Thursday nights and some weekends)
  • Required dates: June 6, July 4, July 17 - 19
