DESCRIPTION

The Grossing Room Assistant supports daily operations in the Gross Room by accessioning specimens, assisting with frozen section cutting, and preparing surgical specimens for grossing under supervision. The role requires strict adherence to current laboratory safety and quality standards and active participation in maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies such as CAP, TJC, OSHA, and other federal and state bodies. In addition to technical responsibilities, the position includes inventory management, supply ordering, clerical and telephone support, and effective communication with laboratory staff, pathologists, and other customers to ensure efficient workflow.

Essential Responsibilities

Under supervision, the Grossing Room Assistant performs technical tasks including cutting frozen sections, preparing surgical specimens for grossing, and conducting routine equipment checks and preventive maintenance. The role includes handling tissue sample requests, accessioning orders, labeling and organizing materials, and preparing and packaging specimens for send-out testing while tracking shipments. The assistant also manages the receipt, filing, and retrieval of slides and blocks, pulls materials for tumor conferences, and ensures accurate tracking throughout the department.

Additional duties include following up on missing samples or incomplete orders, delivering and retrieving materials between laboratory sections, and assisting with billing reconciliation and data entry. The position supports departmental compliance efforts by adhering to regulatory standards and contributing to the development and revision of policies and procedures. Responsibilities also extend to inventory management, supply ordering, and general clerical tasks. When needed, the assistant may support sample processing or related tasks in other areas of the Clinical Laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science plus two years ofexperience in the kind of work to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • 2 years of grossing experience. Individuals assisting with grossing may perform physical examination and description of tissue specimens (e.g., color, weight, measurements, or other characteristics), as well as mechanical procedures such as dissection under appropriate supervision.

  • A minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours in science courses, which must include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours in any combination of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology.

  • Laboratory training, which includes either: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES or CAAHEP (this may be included in the 60 semester hours above), or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high-complexity testing is performed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in a high-volume anatomic pathology or clinical laboratory environment, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple specimen workflows while maintaining accuracy and regulatory compliance.

  • Demonstrated skill in handling complex or unusual surgical specimens under supervision, including familiarity with grossing room equipment and frozen section processes.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $82,434 - $102,521 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $39.48 - $49.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
