Job Summary

We study the development of blood vessels in the human brain to understand how the vascular and nervous system develop in healthy brains, what goes wrong in the brain of premature babies which causes the disease germinal matrix hemorrhage, and how we can potentially manipulate the blood brain barrier to deliver therapeutics.

The ideal candidate for this position will be (1) interested in pediatric health and (2) trained in iPSC and organoid differentiation protocols. Under direct supervision and training, the Staff Research Associate I (SRA I) will utilize various protocols necessary for specific neuroscience and/or vascular experiments. This person will be co-supervised by Dr. Crouch and Dr. Olena Trush in the Crouch lab. Depending on interest, additional responsibilities will likely include collection and processing of biological specimens, isolation and culture of primary human vascular and neural cells, as well as functional analysis via flow cytometry, imaging, and RNA sequencing.

Strong organizational and communication skills are required. Technical accuracy, reliability, and a willingness to learn are of the utmost importance.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine (SOM). The department is comprised of 18 divisions employing over 400 core faculty, 83 fellows, 84 residents, 31 Post Docs and non-faculty academics and 300 staffs. The Department has annual clinical income from inpatient and outpatient activities totaling over $100 million and annual extramural funding (contracts and grants) exceeding $58 million. The department ranks 21st in the nation among Pediatric departments for funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Knowledge of scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes, ultra-low freezers)
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks routinely (genotyping, histology protocols, etc).
  • Passion to learn new techniques and flexibility to adapt to changing needs.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with students, postdoctoral fellows, staff, and faculty.
  • Meticulous record keeping abilities
  • Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge/experience is iPSC experiment
  • Knowledge/experience with Organoid culture
  • Knowledge/experience with Neurovascular assembloid fusions

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working with human biological samples
  • Basic knowledge of coding language such as R
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry, and/or flow cytometry
