Job Summary


The Director of Organizational Effectiveness for UCSF Health is responsible for strengthening leadership capability, leader alignment, and culture across the UCSF Health enterprise. This role focuses on ensuring leaders - particularly people managers - have clear expectations, shared norms, and practical tools to lead teams effectively in a complex, highly regulated clinical environment. This role is accountable for reinforcing a consistent leadership culture across hospitals, ambulatory practices, and clinical operations, while supporting leaders through growth, change, and operational pressure.

Brings thorough knowledge of organizational development, effectiveness and strategic planning. Establishes operational objectives and work plans, and delegates to team. Involved in developing, modifying and executing organization policies that affect immediate operation and may also have organization-wide effect. Responsible for establishing goals and objectives in support of organizational effectiveness. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs.

Organizational Effectiveness

  • Partner with Health leadership to address organizational challenges impacting workforce performance, engagement, and stability.
  • Clarify leadership roles, decision rights, and expectations in matrixed clinical and operational environments.
  • Provide frameworks and tools that enable leaders to lead consistently under clinical, operational, and financial pressure.
  • Direct and guide team to consult with leaders on organizational effectiveness

Leader Alignment & Culture

  • Drive alignment around UCSF Health's culture, values, and leadership norms across hospitals, ambulatory settings, and support functions.
  • Translate culture expectations into practical, observable leadership behaviors within clinical environments.
  • Support leadership alignment during enterprise initiatives, clinical transformation, and operational change.

Leadership Development

  • Establish and reinforce clear leadership expectations and people-leadership standards for managers across UCSF Health.
  • Support clinical, operational, and administrative leaders in building core leadership capability, with emphasis on managing teams, performance, and accountability.
  • Partner with senior Health leaders to ensure leadership expectations are clearly understood and consistently reinforced.
  • Manage team providing consultation and guidance to develop leaders

Enterprise Integration (Health)

  • Ensure leadership development and alignment are integrated with UCSF Health talent and performance practices.
  • Partner closely with UCSF Health HR Business Partners, Labor Relations, and Workforce teams.
  • Align leadership efforts with patient care priorities, safety, quality, and operational outcomes.

Measurement & Continuous Improvement

  • Define and track success metrics for leadership alignment and effectiveness across UCSF Health.
  • Use workforce, engagement, and operational data to assess impact and guide continuous improvement.

The salary range for this position is $133,700-$313,300 Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Experience working with leaders in complex healthcare or similarly regulated environments
  • Demonstrated ability to align leaders around shared expectations and behaviors
  • Strong influencing skills and credibility with senior leaders
  • Thorough knowledge of organization and system operations, protocols and procedures
  • Demonstrates leadership and management skills required to lead department, including management of staff performance and development, team building and communications, resolution of issues and conflicts, review and approval of work, and hiring and training employees
  • Requires highly developed diplomacy, influential and interpersonal skills to work effectively across the organization at all levels
  • Able to interpret and communicate, both verbally and in writing, highly complex information in a clear and concise manner
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience/training
  • 8-10+ years of experience in leadership development, organizational effectiveness, or related roles

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree preferred.
