Job Summary

The Senior Enterprise Monitoring Administrator uses his experience in server systems engineering/administration to support the development, configuration, and day-to-day operations of UC Davis Health System enterprise monitoring platforms. The Senior Enterprise Monitoring Administrator collaborates with a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders in administrative and academic units to provide best in class monitoring services. This involves provisioning, monitoring, upgrading, and capacity planning for the monitoring environment, including systems administration duties as required, as well as overseeing day-to-day operations for stability, remediating system outages, and ensuring compliance with UCDHS policies. As a member of Technology Services, the Senior Enterprise Monitoring Administrator demonstrates Technology Services values in action.

Under direction, incumbent will function as a resource and expert in all enterprise monitoring needs for the complex architectures required by mission critical applications and foundational infrastructure for the Health System. Incumbent will possess the knowledge required to be able to architect and implement availability, performance, and end to end enterprise operations monitoring, automated event correlation and analysis, notification, escalation, and incident drill down diagnosis in a complex IT operations environment. This person will assist in developing an enterprise monitoring framework, selecting monitoring tools, defining new monitoring points, creating appropriate tests, alerts, and building operational dashboards. This will include monitoring product administration responsibilities to include architecting for growth and scaling for the environment, sizing new and existing environments, user and security administration for monitoring products.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • 5 years experience as a server systems administrator/engineer.
  • Experience with operational monitoring with a focus on event standardization, filtering, detection, correlation, alerting, reporting, and dashboarding along with user and security administration.
  • Proven experience provisioning, migrating, and utilizing cloud technologies.
  • Extensive experience planning for future enterprise monitoring needs across a business application community in a collaborative way.
  • Extensive experience with Windows, some experience with AIX, Linux and associated cloud technologies.
  • Proven experience publishing performance reports and recommending enhancements or modifications to the environment to meet future enterprise monitoring needs.
  • Practical experience in APM working with application & infrastructure teams to define / interpret monitoring /alerting requirements for managing end user experience, fault isolation, and proactive environment health management including alerting, analysis, and reporting using Datadog or a similar monitoring platform.
  • Possess experience working in multi-tiered support as needed.
  • Requires practical knowledge of, systems administration, and web infrastructure (web services, trend analysis, etc.)
  • A deep knowledge of multiple enterprise monitoring technologies will be a bonus.
  • Ability to interpret, analyze, and apply pertinent service level agreements, policies, procedures, regulations, and other requirements, and turn them into actionable outcomes. Strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members.
  • Possess extended experience with managing large enterprise monitoring systems.
  • Possess basic knowledge of TCP/IP and related protocols.
  • Possess strong project management, time management and customer service.
  • Understand Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN).
  • Understand TCP/IP Stack, NFS, CIFS, Fibre Channel Protocol.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines and adapt to changes, delays and unexpected events.
  • Tact, diplomacy and confidentiality to deal with confidential and sensitive material.
  • Ability to manage competing demands. Fully respond to questions with the audience in mind.
  • Act as escalation point for support teams in subject matter areas.
  • Provide leadership, make recommendations, and collaborate with software developers, system and network engineers/administrators, and other support staff.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems.
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MCSE or MCP with experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related IT area
  • 10 years server systems administration/engineering with experience in performance/systems monitoring. Datadog monitoring platform experience.
