Primary Purpose of Position
The purpose of this position is to provide personal assistance and instructional support to students served by Exceptional Children services through the direction and guidance of certified Exceptional Children education. This includes providing assistance and support, as needed, to assigned students in accomplishing activities of daily living; including, but not limited to eating, toileting, grooming, dressing, transferring, mobility and positioning. Other duties include performing a variety of technical and clerical tasks to support the Exceptional Children's program.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Diplomas or degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Job Functions
The University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative was established by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide enhanced educational programming to improve student performance and to plan demonstration sites for the preparation of future teachers and
school administrators. Appalachian State University operates the App State Academy at Middle Fork.
The purpose of this position is to provide personal assistance and instructional support to students served by Exceptional Children services under the guidance of certified Exceptional Children educators. This position will assist with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, mobility, academic support, and behavioral management.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Model and meet the expectations of the Portrait of a Lab School Team Member.
Personal Care & Daily Living Support

  • Assist students with personal hygiene (e.g., toileting, grooming, and dressing).
  • Help with eating and drinking during meals and snacks.
  • Assist in physical and occupational therapy sessions throughout the school day.
  • Provide mobility assistance within the classroom, school, and on field trips.


Academic Support

  • Help the student remain on task and complete in-class assignments.
  • Reinforce and clarify instructions to ensure understanding.
  • Assist with modifying learning materials to match individual student abilities.
  • Provide one-on-one support during instructional activities as planned and provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist with special programming and academic instruction as needed.

Behavioral Support

  • Use behavior management strategies to support positive student behaviors.
  • Model appropriate behavior and facilitate social interactions.
  • Help the student with social skills development.
  • Supervise the student during transitions and non-classroom activities (e.g., lunch, recess).
  • Communicate regularly with the classroom teacher regarding students' behavioral needs and progress.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Regularly communicate with the classroom teacher regarding students' academic, emotional, and physical needs.
  • Maintain positive and constructive communication with the student, their family, and the school community.
  • Complete all required trainings to support the academic, social, communicative, and behavioral needs of the student.
  • Complete daily interaction logs documenting interventions, support provided, and student progress.

Safety & Well-Being

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the student throughout the school day.
  • Supervise the student during field trips and other school-wide activities.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly learning environment that promotes student safety.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Adhere to staff expectations and school handbooks.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance, and appropriately use conference/planning time.
  • Respect student confidentiality in accordance with professional ethics and laws.
  • Comply with state and federal educational statutes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or school administration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four-year degree (e.g., in education, psychology, or related fields)

  • CPR certification
  • Previous experience working with students with special needs
  • Prior experience in a laboratory school setting

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Communication - Verbal

  • Responsible for providing toileting needs for wheelchair-bound/physically challenged students K-5.
  • Work with Children with adaptive needs and assist them with their various needs.
  • Work with non-verbal and verbal students
  • Provide one-on-one service to children with special needs.
  • Work well with other Exceptional Children's team members.
  • Work in a fast-paced setting as a supportive and nurturing caregiver.
  • Constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students; monitor student attitudes and encourage self-esteem; assist students with becoming increasingly independent.

Problem Solving

  • Feed students, when necessary; toilet students, if needed; and assist with any other tasks students are not able to perform for themselves.

  • Effective written communication with Exceptional Children's team members, teachers, staff and school administration.
