Position Summary
The Machine Shop Supervisor provides leadership and daily task direction to machine shop production team members to ensure safety, quality, productivity, and customer delivery expectations are consistently met. This role serves as the primary technical and operational leader for the machine shop team, supporting problem-solving, process execution, and continuous improvement initiatives. The supervisor is accountable for team performance and must accomplish objectives through leadership, coaching, development, and effective communication across shifts and functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead machine shop production personnel to meet safety, quality, and output objectives. Review production schedules and assign personnel to meet manufacturing priorities. Serve as the first point of contact for machining-related questions, troubleshooting, and process issues. Support machine setups, job transfers, and equipment utilization decisions. Sign off on DMRs, approve engineering tooling purchases, and authorize low-cost scrap events within approval limits. Ensure clear cross-shift communication and operational continuity. Lead problem-solving and continuous improvement activities supporting safety, quality, and productivity goals. Develop, coach, and evaluate team members to support growth and performance improvement. Maintain required production documentation, records, and reporting. Ensure TPM activities and preventive maintenance coordination are completed. Support employment activities, including hiring, training, counseling, and discipline in partnership with Manufacturing Leadership. Maintain compliance with company policies, internal controls, and safety standards. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of machine shop experience, including 1-2 years performing machine setups. Strong working knowledge of machine shop operations, including:
Spindle, feed, and rapid overrides Print reading and part inspection to print requirements Machine troubleshooting and basic operation
Basic understanding of CNC programming, including commonly used G-codes and M-codes. Understanding of machine capabilities and limitations to support efficient job transfers. Minimum 3 years of leadership, supervisory, or lead experience in a manufacturing environment. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills. Working knowledge of manufacturing systems, quality tools, and continuous improvement methods preferred.
Education / Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required. College coursework or training in Lean Manufacturing, APICS, Quality Systems, or related fields preferred. Proven success leading teams in a manufacturing or machining environment.
Work Environment
This role operates in both shop and office environments and requires standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs occasionally), and working around active machinery, noise, and varying temperatures.
