Job Summary


Duration through mid-April; possibility of an extension. Preferred shift 5 am - 1:30 pm; flexible.

Under the supervision of Senior Technologists, the Lead Technologist, and the Histology Supervisor, the Histotechnologist performs routine and specialized histology procedures in a high-volume Histology Laboratory. Duties include tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, specimen accessioning, quality assurance activities, and operation of laboratory information systems. The position rotates weekly among laboratory workstations and may provide coverage in the Immunohistochemistry laboratory.


Essential Functions

  • Operate the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to accession specimens and enter, retrieve, barcode, and track case materials
  • Perform tissue processing using automated tissue processors
  • Embed tissue specimens in paraffin for microtomy
  • Section paraffin-embedded tissue to prepare microscopic slides
  • Perform routine H&E and special stains in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Prepare staining reagents and operate automated staining instruments
  • Perform manual or automated coverslipping of slides
  • Perform Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) staining using automated platforms
  • Assemble and deliver completed case materials to pathologists and trainees
  • File tissue blocks and slides accurately and in a timely manner
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance and quality control programs, including maintenance of control slides and blocks
  • Assist with validation and implementation of new tests per established protocols
  • Maintain quality control and temperature logs for laboratory equipment, including refrigerators, ovens, and instruments
  • Rotate among laboratory workstations and perform other related duties as assigned

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Associate degree or a minimum of 60 semester units from a regionally accredited college or university, including at least 12 semester units in biology and chemistry, and one (1) year of experience as a Histotechnologist within the last five (5) years; or

  • Completion of an Associate degree from an accredited Histotechnology program

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications


  • One to two years' experience as a Histotechnologist.
  • ASCP certification: HT or HTL licensed strongly preferred
