Position Description

The Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time 9-month academic appointment Assistant Professor of Practice in Teacher Education for K-12 Special Populations with an emphasis in ESL or Special Education or both. In this position description, Special Populations refers to candidates who have received training, completed graduate-level coursework in ESL, Special Education or both, and have experience working with students who receive services through Special Education and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in the United States.

Responsibilities of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Developing, teaching, and researching the effects of theory-based program and curricular interventions for increasing teacher candidates' instructional competency for Special populations
  • Taking a leadership and collaborative role in Special Populations
  • Working with instructional faculty to ensure high-fidelity implementation of research-supported improvements around quality of delivery and content in Special Populations
  • Develop and teach undergraduate courses in Special Populations in both face-to face and online formats
  • Collaborate on research projects

About the Department/School/Area

The Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education has an innovative teacher preparation program that meets the unique needs of all our students. In collaboration with school districts and community college partners across Texas, TechTeach, our clinically intensive, competency-based program, is preparing educators who are ready to impact students on their first day in the classroom.

Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Faculty Qualifications


  • A completed Ph.D. or Ed.D in Teacher Preparation, Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership/Policy or related field with a specialization (18 hours of graduate level coursework) in Special Populations by September 1, 2026
  • Minimum of 3 years as teacher of record in K-12 Special Populations in the United States
  • Evidence of ability to teach and design competency-based courses in Special Populations for online and face to face format

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Knowledge and experience collaborating within school districts
  • An emerging record of scholarly productivity in Teacher Preparation and or Special Populations as evidenced by published journal articles or conference presentations
  • Current ESL or Special Education teaching licensure/ certification in the United States
  • Higher Education teaching
