Job Summary:

The NEIU Libraries is seeking a Library Specialist to provide user and support services at the reference desk, library tech desk, and Research & Publishing Lab (RLP) within the Ronald Williams Library. Typical tasks involve helping patrons navigate electronic resources, answering reference questions, scheduling and processing equipment loans, and resolving common technology challenges.

The position requires providing high quality public service to a diverse community of library users. Candidates should have strong communication skills, experience working in customer service or library settings, and familiarity with common computer applications and research tools.

Job Description:

REFERENCE SERVICES

  • Assists library patrons by providing query response and finding activities, including interpreting queries; directing or performing the full range of bibliographic searching of English language materials and some foreign language material for users using print and online bibliographic tools.

  • Reference service includes assisting patrons using print and electronic library resources, such as catalogs, academic databases, directories, indexes, digital repositories, and reference works. Reference service also includes guiding patrons in formulating research questions, choosing appropriate keywords, creating effective search strategies, retrieving relevant information, citing sources, and avoiding plagiarism.

TECH DESK SERVICES

  • Assists library patrons at the Library Tech Desk in using software, hardware, and equipment in the RPL and public computers. This includes standard office software, digital editing software, and relevant multimedia applications. Provides technology consultations as needed.

EQUIPMENT LENDING PROGRAM

  • Supports the operations and maintenance of equipment designated for loan to library patrons.

  • Schedules pick-up and return appointments.

  • Reviews policy expectations with patrons when equipment is being loaned.

  • Follows up with borrowers regarding equipment problems and late returns.

  • Notifies library administration when equipment is not returned within the policy timeframe.

  • In collaboration with the Reference Coordinator, maintains and updates procedure documentation as needed.

RELATED DUTIES

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:

A. work experience in a library or equivalent setting.

B. college course work in any field as measured by the following conversion table

  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)

  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)

  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)

  • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

Departmental Preferences:

  • Experience with specialized library management systems and software, such as Alma/Primo or WorldCat.

  • Experience with academic database platforms, such as EBSCO or ProQuest.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.

Location: Ronald Williams Library (5500 North St. Louis Avenue, Chicago, IL 60625)

This position requires a background check.

Salary Range

$22.63
