The laboratories of Drs. Spiliotis (spiliotislab.org) and Bajikar (bajikarlab.com) in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seek a part-time Laboratory Technician (20-25 hours per week) to perform basic laboratory management, maintenance and upkeep duties, and to assist in technical aspects of laboratory experimentation. The appropriate candidate should have previous training and experience in biology or related fields, including laboratory experience in basic methods of cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and/or small animal handling. The appropriate candidate will split their weekly hours between the Spiliotis and Bajikar laboratories, where they will be stationed physically for the duration of daily working hours based on a pre-arranged and mutually agreeable schedule. Job duties for both laboratories will include: procurement of lab ordering and purchasing, monitoring and restocking of lab consumables and supplies, upkeep of basic lab equipment and digital inventories, and preparation of lab material (e.g., reagents, media) for experimental procedures. Additional duties will include PCR genotyping (Bajikar lab), the purification of plasmid DNA and proteins, and/or the acquisition and analysis of microscopy images as needed. Individuals with previous experience in laboratory management, molecular cloning, mouse genotyping, and/or protein purification/biochemistry are encouraged to apply. Minimum Requirements Education: Associate's degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience, education, certification in lieu of degree. Experience: 2+ years of lab experience which may include student experience. Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. Salary Range: The anticipated salary for this part-time position is $20/hour.
