Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Litigation & IP Innovation Attorney. This position could be based in any of our U.S. offices and consideration given for 100% remote US locations.

The Innovation Attorney will support the Firm's innovation efforts to improve the delivery of legal services through the trifecta of people, process, and technology, specifically focusing on our Litigation and IP business units.

This position is part of our Innovation team and collaborates across offices, practice groups, and departments to execute on projects and initiatives. The role reports to the Managing Director of Practice Innovation and works in close collaboration with all members and leadership of the Litigation and IP business units.


Responsibilities

The Innovation Attorney will lead and support efforts to optimize client service delivery and increase efficiencies across the Litigation and IP business units. Responsibilities include:

  • Support, coordinate, and lead projects to streamline and improve the delivery of legal services, including:
    • Understanding the firm's available resources and technology, and developing best practices and other programs to drive teams and tasks to the "right" resources (whether people, process, or technology)
    • Leading projects to digitalize the practice, including automation, data capture and use of online resources
    • Supporting the firm's data strategy, including tracking matter data, monitoring usage of practice content and resources, and capturing experience data
    • Serving as a one-on-one resource for practice resource questions and issues
  • Support, coordinate, and lead projects to integrate technology, including generative AI, into the practice of law, including:
    • Vetting, piloting, and supporting the onboarding of technology to support the legal practice
    • Serve as product manager for select technology, including responsibility for rollout, promotion and adoption, communications, gathering feedback, collaboration with vendor, and measuring ROI
    • Driving the promotion, adoption, and utilization of legal technology, including generative AI, within the business units
    • Identifying, developing, promoting and training on generative AI use cases for the practice
    • Serving as a one-on-one resource for lawyers on incorporating generative AI and other legal technology into their practice, including supporting individual training, questions, identifying workflows ripe for technology, troubleshooting, and ideation
  • Serve as a supporting resource for new and existing large litigation docket teams on:
    • Onboarding and design of matter management workflow, including individual matter intake and staffing, timekeeping and billing requirement compliance, resource materials (playbooks and precedent libraries), internal and external collaboration, and client reporting
    • Creation of tailored solutions (including dashboards), workflow automation, reporting, and budget tracking
    • Identifying and integrating appropriate resources, including Orrick Analytics, CaseStream, Team Support, and litigation technology
  • Support, coordinate, and lead projects to develop and improve client-facing solutions, including:
    • Designing and improving solutions to share matter metrics and data with client and team
    • Capturing and leveraging matter and experience data to improve and inform future matters
    • Designing platforms to improve collaboration with clients, local counsel, and third-parties
  • Develop and improve the use of practice content to streamline the delivery of legal services, including:
    • Creating, maintaining, and automating knowledge libraries
    • Creating and maintaining databases capturing expert, mediator, arbitrator, and judicial experiences for knowledge sharing
    • Identifying relevant practice content in collaboration with the firm's Research & Information team, including third-party resources and forms, and integrating them into practice workflows
    • Identifying additional areas of opportunity for practice content sharing and creation, and process improvements
  • Regularly evaluate the efficient delivery of legal services through internal data, external benchmarking, and monitoring trends in market, and identify additional and creative opportunities to improve client service and support the Litigation and IP teams
  • Educate lawyers and legal professionals on practice content, client-facing solutions, firm resources, technology, and other initiatives to improve legal services, and lead efforts to improve utilization, as needed
  • Communicate and consult with administrators, lawyers, paralegals and staff on practice content, efficiency, client solutions, legal service initiatives, technology, and projects
  • Develop and maintain case studies for use in marketing and business development, and develop and maintain portal pages and other resources for the business unit

Qualifications

  • Juris doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited university or college and admission to practice in good standing in a US jurisdiction required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a litigation or IP attorney in a large law firm
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to present complex ideas to attorneys, managers, clients, and the public in layman's terms.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization and/or specific direction exists.
  • Familiarity with best practices and technology to manage workflows, documents and communications.
  • Understanding of the importance and relevance of knowledge management, practice and project management and efficiency to help the firm meet its overall business plan.
  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm about legal technology, including opportunities to leverage AI and generative AI in legal services.
  • Excellent analytical, project management, prioritization, and organization skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently with good judgment, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and quickly prioritize projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively at all organizational levels.
  • Flexible team player with ability to approach problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm, and innovation.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, coupled with a positive outlook; public relations and diplomacy skills must be excellent.
  • Availability to travel as necessary.
  • Desire and ability to work beyond the position's written duties and assist on other projects and initiatives, as needed.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is:

  • New York City, Silicon Valley, and San Francisco $200,000 - $325,000
  • Washington DC, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica, Sacramento, Boston, and Seattle $200,000 - $325,000
  • All Other US Locations $200,000 - $300,000

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
