Primary Purpose Serves as a technical authority, shaping engineering strategies and guiding major projects to achieve organizational objectives. Influences design standards, drives adoption of advanced technologies, and fosters innovation to ensure long-term reliability and competitive advantage.
The Process Safety Engineer provides technical leadership and oversight for all process safety management (PSM) and risk engineering activities at the LNG facility. This role ensures that LNG operations comply with federal and state regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company safety policies. The engineer supports safe, reliable, and compliant operation of LNG liquefaction, storage, and loading systems by identifying hazards, evaluating risks, and implementing effective safeguards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures engineering projects and operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Oversees in-depth assessments of system breakdowns and develops corrective actions.
- Implements advanced monitoring techniques to anticipate failures before they occur.
- Tracks project expenditures and resource usage to support alignment with financial objectives.
- Establishes documentation and training programs to preserve technical expertise across engineering teams.
- Maintain and improve compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119, PHMSA, EPA, USCG, and applicable LNG-specific regulations (e.g., NFPA 59A).
- Guides the design, construction, and commissioning of large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Conducts high-level engineering and financial assessments for major expansion or modernization projects.
- Lead and facilitate PSM program elements, including: Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), Management of Change (MOC), Operating Procedures, Mechanical Integrity (MI), PreStartup Safety Reviews (PSSR), Incident Investigations, Bypass Override Assessment, Site PSM KPIs
- Ensure LNG process documentation (P&IDs, cause-and-effect matrices, relief studies) is current and technically accurate.
- Able to conduct facility risk assessments, including: HAZOP, LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis), Bowtie analysis
- Able to evaluate hazards related to cryogenic LNG equipment, high-pressure systems, marine loading, flammable gas dispersion, and vapor cloud formation.
- Able to evaluate and track process safety risks via risk register and properly manage risk action plans and support quantitative risk assessments (QRA) and consequence modeling (e.g., FLACS, PHAST, or equivalent)
- Able to provide process safety guidance on LNG systems such as Liquefaction trains, Refrigeration compressors, BOG (Boil-Off Gas) handling systems, LNG storage tanks, Flare and vent systems, Marine loading arms and review P&IDs, PFDs, SIS logic, relief device sizing, and safeguard adequacy.
- Knowledge to support SIL studies and verification for safety instrumented functions (SIFs), and work with I&E and Controls teams to ensure proper configuration and testing of shutdown, ESD, and fire/gas systems.
- Lead or participate in incident investigations associated with process safety events using methodologies such as TapRooT, 5-Why, or RCA, and identify root causes and ensure corrective actions are implemented and effective while driving continuous improvement initiatives for process safety culture, training, and performance.
- Support development of emergency response plans and drills for LNG-specific scenarios: cryogenic spills, vapor cloud dispersions, jet fires/pool fires, marine transfer incidents
- Provide process safety input for fire protection systems, F&G layouts, and detection strategies.
- Deliver training on PSM elements, LNG hazards, emergency systems, and safe operating practices.
- Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and HSE teams to reinforce safe behaviors and process safety ownership.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Education
- Typically requires a 4 year degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering
Experience
- Typically requires 10 years of related experience in LNG facilities, gas processing, petrochemical or refining, energy operations

Work Schedule
