1.0 FTE / 40 Hours per week


The Behavioral Health Substance Use Disorder Care Team Specialist (SUD CTS) works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of addiction medicine physicians and advanced practice providers, certified substance abuse counselors, registered nurses, and other staff to coordinate, support and deliver evidence-based, high-quality substance use disorder treatment to patients. The SUD CTS performs clinical, administrative and technical tasks which contribute to the smooth workflow and quality patient care experience in the Substance Use Disorder program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: supporting Epic in-basket workflow by reviewing team/provider in-baskets and MyChart messages; coordinating the review and follow-up of phone requests for medical advice and prescription refills; completing and documenting reviews of controlled substance prescriptions within the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program; completion of pre-visit preparation; monitoring patient flow; assisting with triage and patient scheduling; and coordinating with other departments, services or programs. The SUD CTS assists and collaborates with providers and staff within the Substance Use Disorder program, Primary Care, and Behavioral Health in the management and coordination of patient care.


CTS staff at GHC-SCW will have successfully completed medical assistant training or licensed practical nurse training from an accredited program.


The SUD CTS may provide cross coverage to behavioral health or primary care departments dependent on staffing and patient care needs.

JOB SPECIFIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  1. Must meet the requirements for a Medical Assistant (MA), a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or an EMT as described below:

    1. Medical Assistants must have successfully completed an MA training program from an accredited school or program and must be eligible for and receive national certification within six (6) months of employment or must have three years of MA experience and have current national certification. Medical Assistants must obtain national certification from one of the following certifying organizations and must maintain certification by meeting CME requirements:

      1. National Healthcareer Association (CCMA); or
      2. American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); or
      3. American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA); or
      4. National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT); or
      5. By an approved and accredited certifying organization with CME requirements.


    2. Licensed Practical Nurses must have successfully completed an LPN training program from an accredited school or program. In addition, LPNs must have current licensure as a practical nurse in the State of Wisconsin or must obtain licensure as a practical nurse in the State of Wisconsin within six (6) months of employment.
    3. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) must have successfully completed an approved training program and have a valid State of Wisconsin license of one of the following:

      1. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); or
      2. Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT); or
      3. Paramedic (EMT-P).




  2. Possession of or eligibility for a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate is required. Employee must obtain certification within four (4) months of employment.
  3. Ability to travel to various work sites. Employee is expected to provide personal transportation. Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver license if the employee is operating a motor vehicle.
  4. One (1) year of relevant experience working in a clinic or outpatient setting is desirable.
  5. While experience in a substance use disorder setting is desirable, no experience is required. A strong interest in working with people with substance use disorders is required.
  6. Experience or training in administering immunizations and/or other injectable medications.
  7. Knowledge of and ability to perform or learn standard clinical procedures according to established protocols and policies.
  8. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn how to properly use and maintain equipment, materials and supplies used during the course of treatment.
  9. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn and use computer based applications such as MS Office, electronic medical record systems and scheduling applications. Experience with EPIC is desirable. Must type a minimum of 30 WPM with minimal errors.
  10. Knowledge of or ability to learn outpatient clinical administrative procedures.
  11. Knowledge of medical terminology and knowledge of basic pharmacology.
  12. Knowledge of or ability to learn basic pharmacology and medical terminology related to substance use disorders.
  13. Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.
  14. Ability to recognize, identify and report problems to appropriate personnel.
  15. Basic understanding or ability to learn about reimbursement/insurance practices for medical care.
  16. Knowledge of inventory management practices.
  17. Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the basic nature of disease and the basic nature of substance use disorders and to provide instruction on proper care, treatments and follow-up as directed.
  18. Knowledge of medical records and appropriate documentation.
  19. Knowledge of interviewing practices and techniques used in order to gather information.
  20. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including superior skills in telephone communication.
  21. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to be culturally sensitive and to work with a diverse patient population.
  22. Ability to maintain good working relationships with patients and staff and to function effectively as part of a team.
  23. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Knowledge of or ability to learn HIPAA requirements as they apply to substance use disorders treatment.
  24. Ability to climb, stoop, kneel and crouch. Ability to bend, reach, lift, pull, push and/or carry up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
