Job Summary

The Biology and Biological Engineering Division at Caltech seeks a highly motivated research technician to assist with projects in virus engineering and technology development with the Gradinaru group (glab.calgech.edu). The ideal applicant will be skilled in general molecular biology and tissue culture as well as be organized, hard-working and have excellent communication skills. The candidate will work under guidance from the supervisor and primarily in support of a variety of projects within the lab. If time permits, there will be opportunities to carry out independent research projects as well as participate in collaborative efforts with other labs, on and off campus.

Essential Job Duties
  • Perform molecular cloning using established and state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Maintenance of human cell lines according to established protocols.
  • Molecular analysis of cells, including using qPCR and ICC.
  • Preparation and titration of AAV viruses according to established protocols.
  • Under supervision, technician will also perform experiments, collect and assist with data analysis and present data findings to the PI and Director.
  • Perform other related general lab duties, as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field with interest in neuroscience.
  • Must have broad familiarity and hands-on experience with molecular and cellular biology, modern cloning methods and primer and gene synthesis design.
  • Must have direct lab experience (industry or academic) with mammalian tissue culture, cell transfection and general sterile techniques.
  • Familiarity and hands-on experience with the operation of standard lab equipment and with computer software for document generation and data analysis (e.g. Excel, GraphPad Prism, imageJ)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to resolve technical problems and adapt easily to changing needs and priorities.
  • Must possess a high level of initiative and the ability to work with little supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with recombinant viral vectors under BLS2 conditions.
  • Experience with advanced molecular cloning procedures.
  • Experience with electrophysiology (patch clamp or optical).
  • Data analysis experience and demonstrable quantitative skills.
  • Ideal candidate is willing to commit for at least two years.

Hiring Range

$19.00 - $25.75 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
