Job Summary

Duration: 3 months

Ward 86, a nationally recognized HIV primary care clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is seeking a compassionate and motivated Hospital Assistant III to join its multidisciplinary care team. This role supports patients with diverse medical and psychosocial needs, including individuals living with HIV, people experiencing homelessness, and individuals who use substances.

Under the supervision of clinic leadership and in collaboration with medical providers, nurses, and allied health professionals, the Hospital Assistant III plays a vital role in ensuring efficient clinic flow and delivering patient-centered care. Responsibilities span both clinical and clerical functions within a dynamic public health setting.

Primary Care & Specialty Clinic Support

  • Obtain and document patient vital signs and health screenings in the electronic medical record
  • Collect and enter patient demographic information
  • Prepare and maintain exam rooms before, during, and after clinic sessions
  • Assist with patient flow, rooming, and waiting room monitoring
  • Support specialty clinics (e.g., Infectious Disease, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Anal Dysplasia, Golden Compass) by setting up and breaking down equipment and supplies
  • Assist providers during clinical sessions as needed
  • Transport patients, specimens, and equipment across the hospital campus
  • Conduct outreach phone calls as directed
  • Administer vaccinations as directed by licensed clinical staff and per hospital policy

Phlebotomy & Laboratory Support

  • Perform venipuncture and collect specimens (blood, urine, stool, saliva, mucosal samples) according to hospital standards
  • Instruct patients on self-collection of specimens when appropriate
  • Ensure proper specimen labeling, handling, and transport
  • Perform point-of-care testing and daily equipment calibration
  • Maintain laboratory logs, specimen tracking, and inventory
  • Support resistance testing workflows and related documentation

Environment of Care & Administrative Support

  • Restock exam rooms and maintain clinic supply levels
  • Monitor equipment functionality and report issues as needed
  • Maintain a clean and organized clinical environment, including exam rooms, waiting areas, and labs
  • Assist with supply inventory, requisitions, and ordering as applicable
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Minimum of three months experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinic setting.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience using EPIC and/or APeX

License/Certification


  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
