The Perinatal Clinical Operations Coordinator provides essential 24/7 on-site leadership combining clinical operations management with administrative support functions for our perinatal service line. This role oversees daily operations and coordinates patient flow processes from triage to discharge for birthing patients, newborns, and neonates at our two distinct birthing centers. Our La Jolla campus at Jacobs Medical Center includes a level III regional NICU, labor & delivery unit, high-risk antepartum unit, birth center, and a postpartum unit. Our Hillcrest campus includes a level II community NICU and a labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum (LDRP) unit. Our growing Women and Infants service line currently manages over 5,000 deliveries per year with quality metrics reflecting the highest standards of care and evidence-based practices.

This position is designed to enhance operational efficiency, patient safety, and experience through both real-time clinical leadership and administrative support to the perinatal leadership team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Clinical Crisis Response: Immediate response to obstetric and neonatal emergencies, neonatal resuscitations, and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
  • Bi-Campus Coordination: Facilitate patient transfers, float staff between campuses, and ensure equitable resource distribution across both facilities.
  • Patient Flow Management: Oversee admissions, transfers, and discharges to optimize bed utilization while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Physician Partnership: Serve as primary nursing liaison for on-call physicians, addressing concerns, facilitating communication, and ensuring seamless care delivery.
  • Staff Support & Retention: Provide real-time mentoring, conflict resolution, and support to approximately 80 staff members per shift working in high-stress, high-acuity environments.
  • Quality & Safety Surveillance: Monitor patient safety indicators, identify near-misses, and implement immediate corrective actions.

Administrative Support Functions (as directed):

  • Scheduling Support: Assist with staff schedule maintenance, shift adjustments, and coordination of coverage gaps in collaboration with unit leadership.
  • Timekeeping & Payroll: Support accurate timekeeping processes, verify staff hours, manage time-off requests, and assist with payroll-related documentation.
  • Staffing Analysis: Compile and distribute transparent patient flow metrics, census numbers, staffing reports, and productivity data to support operational decision-making.
  • Resource Management: Contribute to utilization of supplies and resources in a cost-effective manner that supports delivery of care.
  • Quality Projects: Assist unit-based leadership team with quality improvement projects, data analysis, and reporting initiatives.
  • Communication & Documentation: Communicate professionally verbally and in writing; maintain accurate operational records and reports.
