The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Gottesman Learning Center Manager will work with the Director of Facilitated Learning Experiences to create and deliver a calendar of programs and learning experiences unique to the affordances of the Gottesman Research Library at
AMNH. Working at the intersection of Education, the Library, and Science divisions, the Manager will identify relevant topics for public discussion and oversee a strategy to activate the rich resources of the
AMNH Library for a broad and expanding audience.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
Program Development
- Develop and implement lifelong learning programs associated with the Library including book clubs, storytime, meetings of community groups, drop-in activities, and interactions with AMNH scientists.
- Plan and oversee logistics of Library-associated public programming.
Institutional Collaboration
- Be a liaison with avocational scientific and naturalist organizations and other community groups.
- Collaborate with other educational and public programming teams to avoid conflicts, identify collaboration opportunities, and expand audiences.
- Collaborate with Marketing, Communications, and Membership departments to develop appropriate messages and promote programming.
Operational Support
- Develop metrics and data to measure program impact.
- Be cross-trained to provide public engagement in other educational venues and programs across the institution.
- Develop and oversee the budgets for Learning Center programming.
Team Management and Oversite
- Supervise, Schedule, and support program assistant staff assigned to the Library programming and Learning Center evening and weekend operations.
- Serve as a "manager on duty" to supervise staff and volunteers in the Gottesman Learning Center, as well as the Learning Labs managed by the Education division.
- Work a Sunday to Thursday (or Tuesday to Saturday) schedule and rotate shifts at the Library Reference desk during weekend open hours and facilitate the active weekend use of the reading room for AMNH visitors.
The expected salary range for the Gottesman Learning Center Manager is $70,000
/annual - $79,000/annual. The
AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. |
| Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelors in a Natural Science, Education, Museum Studies or related field.
- 4 years of experience developing and conducting learning programs or materials for an informal science or cultural institution.
- Maintaining a schedule including weekends and holidays.
- Previous experience in customer-focused/service-related industries.

- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position
