Temporary staff employees are ineligible to receive benefits (leave, health coverage, State service credit, etc.). They are, however, covered by Worker's Compensation provisions.

Minimum Experience/Education
A master's degree in academic advising, student services, higher education, engineering, or a related field is required. 2+ years of experience involving student services in a higher education setting is required.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
The candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking, and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff, and faculty required. A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements. Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is necessary.
A working knowledge of BANNER, Banner Self Service, Canvas and DegreeWorks is a plus.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Academic Advisor in the department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science will assist transfer students and second- through senior-year students in their educational goals. Advisors must have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office with a significant advising caseload. The following list provides examples of the most typical duties for the advisor position.



  • Provide academic advising to second-year through senior-year students (including transfers and matriculated first-time-in college students) majoring in Mechanical Engineering
  • Review degree progress of seniors for anticipated degree completion
  • Review transfer credits and develop advising plans for new transfer students
  • Process academic petitions to resolve transfer credits, requests for transient study and other academic needs
  • Assist with new student orientation
  • Advise students regarding Major course requirements, course selection, academic policies and procedures, and academic resources.
  • Track and intervene with students who have received multiple Early Alerts or midterm warning grades to assist them in adopting strategies for academic success.
  • Guide the understanding and sequencing of academic requirements, navigating academic policies and procedures, developing long and short-term goals, preparing for course selection and registration, and monitoring academic performance and degree progression.
  • Monitor and advise students experiencing academic difficulty and/or those on academic probation
