Position Summary
To provide, coordinate, and support pre-professional opportunities for UNC Asheville University students to work as trained tutors focused on student success with Asheville City Schools' ( ACS) Advancement Via Individual Determination ( AVID) schoolwide program and elective classes at three schools.

This position serves as the coordinator for UNC Asheville's AVID responsibilities under our Memorandum of Understanding ( MOU) with ACS, primarily by hiring and managing UNC Asheville student tutors. The Coordinator is also responsible for tracking engagement with the schools (number of hours worked, students served, monitoring goals and outcomes) to prepare and deliver an end-of-year impact report.

In addition, the Coordinator supports ACS AVID activities at UNC Asheville, coordinating day-of schedule and logistics for events such as ACS campus field trips and Summer Bridge program.

The Coordinator must be a collaborative self-starter who can bridge organizational (internal and external) boundaries. This position will champion UNC Asheville's commitment to community engagement by facilitating a work environment that emphasizes career-readiness and encourages knowledge of, respect for, and the ability to engage with individuals of various backgrounds.

Key duties include co-coordinating tutor training, conducting observations, providing coaching, managing program budgets (including AVID Summer Bridge), organizing campus visits for AVID students, and participating in AVID site teams and university committees. The Coordinator ensures that tutoring and assessment practices adhere to the highest standards for educational effectiveness and fairness.

Supervisory Responsibility: The Coordinator recruits, co-trains (working with ACS personnel), schedules, observes, coaches, supervises, and evaluates approximately 20-30 University student tutors each semester and manages 2 Tutor Leaders. Tutor Leaders are UNC Asheville students who work as peer leaders on-site at AVID sites.

Each semester the Coordinator will complete a midterm and final evaluation for each tutor and Tutor Leader. Also, the Coordinator will monitor the tutoring budget.

The role requires extensive collaboration with Asheville City Schools, Education Department faculty, public school teachers and administrators, and families to ensure high-quality academic support.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree, experience in education or a related nonprofit context, knowledge of current education policies, and familiarity with AVID or similar college-readiness initiatives. The role also demands strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in both university and school environments.
Qualifications


  • Minimum Education / Experience / Skills: This position requires possession of baccalaureate credentials (Must have a Bachelor's degree).



  • Preferred Education / Experience / Skills: NC Teaching license and K-12 classroom experience are desirable. Bachelor's degree required The Coordinator must be qualified to manage and administer all aspects of the Education Department tutoring programs, and must have experience and knowledge of best practices in training and assessment. The Coordinator must have experience managing budgets and supervising paid staff/students. The Coordinator must have an understanding of UNC Asheville's Liberal Arts and Sciences-based Teacher Licensure program. The Coordinator must have experience working With various school populations.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The Coordinator must have an understanding of current Education policies and initiatives. He/she/they must have experience with program administration and implementation, especially with programs built around relationships between college students and public school students. The Coordinator must have experience working with diverse and multicultural students and families. The position requires training and experience in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) or similar school reform initiatives. Additional expectations include strong written and verbal communication, experience with Microsoft Office and Canvas or equivalent, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. The Coordinator must be able to plan and monitor the use of expenditures to meet organizational objectives and compliance. He/she/they must be able to prepare budget documents and reports. The Coordinator must have the ability to understand issues, identify problems and opportunities to determine the appropriate course of action, including assisting others in peer positions and addressing student concerns.

  • Work Schedule and Hours: Temporary Position -Anticipated 6-month assignment (January - June 2026) -Typical hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work during special events may be needed. Travel to participating Asheville City Schools is required.
