The Opportunity: The Marine Port Engineer will be a critical technical leader at Vulcan, acting as the primary liaison between a fleet of vessels and shore-side management. The main priority is ensuring that boats remain operationally ready, safe, and compliant with United States Coast Guard and International maritime regulations. Pay and benefits: The Marine Port Engineer position's salary will be based on experience, but will be from $90,000 to $115,000 annually. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate's compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data. Who You'll Manage: The Marine Port Engineer will directly supervise 3 Marine mechanics and deckhands who will perform vessel engineering duties. Who You'll Work With: The Marine Port Engineer will work directly with and receive support from several department heads and support groups to lead the business unit to achieve industry-leading safety performance and operational excellence. The position will work closely with the Marine Operations Manager, Marine Dispatch Manager, Plant Managers, Safety Group, HR Group, Support Services & Engineering, and Procurement teams. Who You'll Work For: The Marine Port Engineer will work directly under the Marine Operations Manager, responsible for providing support to Marine operations in the NE Division. What You'll Do: Maintenance & Repair: Plan and supervise all routine maintenance, emergency repairs, and major overhauls for propulsion systems, electrical plants, and auxiliary machinery. Towing Gear Integrity: Oversee the inspection, testing, and certification of critical towing hardware, including heavy-duty towing winches, tow wires, H-bits, and capstans. Project Management: Develop detailed repair specifications for dry-docking periods. Negotiate with shipyards and provide on-site supervision for hull plating repairs, shaft alignments, and fendering replacements. Regulatory Compliance and Recordkeeping: Ensure all vessels maintain valid certifications. Liaise with regulatory bodies like the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and classification societies (ABS, Lloyd's Register). Maintaining meticulous logs of all repairs and modifications, which are legal requirements for "Certificates of Inspection." Subchapter M & TSMS: Lead the implementation of the Towing Safety Management System (TSMS). Act as the primary point of contact for Third-Party Organizations (TPOs) and the USCG to ensure the fleet maintains valid Certificates of Inspection (COI). Budgeting: Manage the engineering department budget, including cost estimation for spare parts, contractor labor, and capital improvements. Emergency Technical Support: Provide 24/7 "on-call" assistance for mechanical failures. In the event of an engine-room fire, flooding, or propulsion loss, you act as the shore-side technical lead for the response. Inspections: Conduct regular physical inspections of vessels to evaluate condition, cleanliness, and adherence to Safety Management Systems (SMS). Additional Responsibilities. Skills You'll Need: Education: Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is preferred (Maritime Academy graduate is highly desirable). Experience: 5+ years of experience in ship maintenance and repair, or experience serving as a licensed Chief Engineer or First Assistant Engineer. Licensure: A valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) is required. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus. A Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC card) is also a requirement. Skills: Must have a deep knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical distribution.
Physical & Travel Requirements Must be able to climb ladders, enter confined spaces (tanks/voids), and work in extreme weather conditions.
