What to Expect
Tesla Energy's mission is to enable sustainable abundance through the large-scale deployment of clean energy solutions, including solar generation, battery storage, and innovative energy programs. By expanding access to reliable, affordable electricity, we aim to create long-term value for communities and the planet. The Data Science & Analytics team's mission is to empower informed decision making by delivering trusted, high-quality data products that turn evidence into action. We partner closely with Operations and Product teams to solve high-impact business problems through analytics, experimentation, and machine learning. This is a mid-level, full-stack Machine Learning Engineer and Data Scientist role supporting multiple Tesla Residential Energy product lines, including Powerwall, Solar Roof, Retrofit Solar, and Wall Connector. You will design, build, and deploy production-grade data and machine learning solutions, working across functional teams to deliver actionable insights and scalable data products. The successful candidate is highly technical, intellectually curious, well-organized, and able to clearly communicate complex analytical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
What You'll Do
- Own the full lifecycle of machine learning and optimization models - from exploration and prototyping to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement - supporting forecasting and operational decision-making
- Collaborate cross-functionally with a team that blends software engineering, data science, and product to ensure solutions align with the system design, operational needs, and end-user impact
- Build and maintain scalable production data pipelines consumed by software applications and analytics teams, applying first-principles thinking to identify root causes and drive architectural improvements
- Conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA) to uncover insights and develop descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and causal models that evaluate program performance
- Communicate findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences, translating business questions into innovative analytical solutions
- Example projects include:Incrementality and lift testing, attribution modeling, and demand forecasting; prediction of order conversion, churn, and cancellation based on customer behavior; and causal inference analyses to measure program and operational effectiveness
What You'll Bring
- 2+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer, AI Engineer, Data Scientist, or similar role
- Strong proficiency in Python with experience writing production-quality software and automated testing (pytest, unittest)
- Experience deploying end-to-end data or ML pipelines used by production systems
- Solid understanding of core Python libraries (NumPy, Pandas) and ML/statistical frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, SciPy, Bayesian methods)
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a commitment to continuous learning, mentorship, and raising the technical performance of the team
- Experience with modern data architectures and distributed systems (SQL/NoSQL, Spark, Kafka) preferred
- Familiarity with cloud and large-scale computing environments (e.g., object storage, logging/monitoring tools) preferred
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and containerized workflows (Docker, Jenkins, Kubernetes) preferred
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent experience
