The Opportunity

Ulteig is seeking a seasonal Summer Environmental Intern to support environmental compliance and due diligence efforts for public and private clients across our Lifeline Sectors, including Transportation, Renewables, Power, and Water, as well as other industries we serve.

This internship provides hands-on exposure to environmental analysis, regulatory compliance, and field investigations. Our goal is to help clients balance responsible development with the protection of natural and cultural resources. The intern will have flexibility to work from our Bismarck, North Dakota office and/or remotely from western North Dakota, depending on project needs.

The Environmental Intern will support new and ongoing projects while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The ideal candidate has an interest in environmental planning, permitting, and fieldwork, with preferred exposure to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, wetland delineation, biological resources, and/or environmental due diligence surveys, documentation, and approvals. This role offers hands-on experience applying environmental regulations to real-world projects.

What You'll Do



  • Participate on multidisciplinary project teams to prepare environmental documentation, including:

    • NEPA documents
    • Wetland delineation reports
    • Biological assessments
    • Environmental site assessments
    • Noise analysis and permit applications


  • Review, interpret, and summarize environmental and field data for ongoing investigations, monitoring, and mitigation efforts
  • Assist with fieldwork efforts such as wildlife, botanical, water resource, and environmental surveys
  • Communicate scientific and technical information clearly to project teams
  • Contribute to written environmental reports and supporting materials
  • Support public and private clients with environmental permitting, coordination, and compliance activities
  • Work within defined scopes, schedules, and budgets while maintaining quality standards
  • Build professional relationships through collaboration with internal teams and client support

What We Expect from You



  • Bachelor's degree in progress in environmental science, environmental planning, environmental policy, biology, wildlife management, natural resources management, or a related field
  • Interest in Federal, State and Local regulations, including:

    • NEPA
    • Endangered species Act (ESA)
    • Clean Water (CWA)
    • Clean Air Act (CAA)
    • National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA)
    • CERCLA and/or RCRA


  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work on multiple tasks or projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat; experience with GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps) is a plus
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to operate a 4-wheel drive pickup (UTV or trailering experience is a plus)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to walk up to 5 miles per day in rough terrain and up to 10 miles per day in flat terrain
  • Ability to perform physically demanding field tasks using basic tools (e.g., shovels)
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Willingness to travel frequently for fieldwork, including overnight stays
  • Must be available to work full-time during Summer 2026
  • Must have permanent authorization to work in the United States

Additional Opportunity Details:
Target Base Compensation for this role is $26/hr.
