The Welding Engineer oversees all facility welding operations, driving the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of welding processes to ensure product quality and adherence to industry standards. This position will provide support to the manufacturing departments in the areas of welding, including robotic welding and setup; materials, manufacturing process improvement and development; and special project management. The role collaborates crossfunctionally with Operations, Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance, and reports to the Plant Engineering Manager. Responsibilities
- Serve as welding subject matter expert (SME); providing technical support to production teams for all material joining processes (inclusive of gas metal arc welding (GMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), resistance spot welding (RSW), projection welding (PW), and brazing)
- Safety: Champion safe work practices, PPE usage, and risk mitigation; collaborate with EHS on hazard assessments and compliance.
- Process Ownership: Develop, qualify, and sustain welding procedures (e.g., WPS/PQR/WPQR), parameters, and controls across manual, semi-automatic, and automated cells to meet internal quality goals and regulatory/customer requirements.
- Quality Assurance: Partner with Quality to define CTQs, acceptance criteria, and inspection plans; support NDE/visual inspection, defect analysis, and corrective/preventive actions.
- Equipment & Tooling: Specify, justify, and help implement welding equipment, torches, fixtures, sensors, and consumables; participate in CARs and CAPEX projects; and support equipment runoffs, FAT/SAT, and production launch.
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure processes conform to relevant codes/standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, ISO 3834) and customer specifications; maintain documentation and audit readiness. Assist in defining the welding requirements during new product development (NPD) and production processes.
- Continuous Improvement: Analyze process data and drive rootcause problem solving to improve firstpass yield, scrap/rework reduction, cycle time, and cost.
- Training & Certification: Lead and support the training of operators/technicians on equipment use, safety, and procedures; support welder qualification and ongoing skills development.
Desired Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years in welding engineering for metal fabrication/manufacturing (pressure vessels/tanks experience a plus).
- Strong knowledge of welding metallurgy, heat input control, distortion management, fixturing, consumables, shielding gases, and NDE methods; familiarity with robots/automation, PLC/HMI interfaces, and data acquisition.
- Certifications (Preferred): AWS CWI/CWE, IIW/EWE, or equivalent.
- Structured problem solving, clear communication, collaborative leadership, and the ability to influence crossfunctional teams.
- Experience with project management tools. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, and Word).
