Overview

Employment Type: Per Diem (PRN)

Shifts Available: Days

Hours: 12-hour shifts - 7:00am to 7:00pm

Location: St Joseph Medical Center- Kansas City, MO

The Nurse Extern in the Emergency Department provides basic patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. This role is designed for nursing students who have completed foundational clinical coursework and are seeking handson experience in a fastpaced, highacuity environment. The Nurse Extern supports nursing staff while developing clinical judgment, technical skills, and familiarity with emergency care workflows.


Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to):

    Assist RNs with patient care activities including vital signs, patient transport, hygiene, and comfort measures.
  • Perform clinical skills within scope (e.g., glucometer checks, EKGs, specimen collection, splinting, documentation assistance).
  • Support the ED team during triage, trauma alerts, and rapid medical interventions as appropriate to training.
  • Observe and learn assessment techniques, emergency procedures, and medical decision-making under RN supervision.
  • Demonstrate initiative in learning opportunities, competency development, and professional behavior.


Qualifications

1. Successfully completed the first semester of a nursing program.
2. Must be in good and academic standing.
3. Current Basic Life Support Certification.
4. Certified Nursing Assistant preferred.
