Association Aquatics Director

Develops, organizes, implements and evaluates YMCA aquatics programs with a focus on quality, safety, youth development and healthy living for the YMCA of Greater Houston. Works with the Association Aquatics Team to focus on program development, innovation, compliance, safety, strategic initiatives and revenue growth. Serves as the technical expert and resource for aquatic safety and programs.

Essential Functions:


  1. Develops strategies to increase program quality to grow program retention, impact and revenue.
    1. Ensure that Centers are following program standards, best practices and utilizing association tools and resources.
    2. Work with Aquatics Director to determine what Aquatics Director staffing is needed during peak program times to ensure that consistency of program quality occurs.
    3. Regularly visit and evaluate on-site and off-site programs. Provide feedback to the Center Leaders and Aquatics Director's regarding issues and determine resources needed, etc.
    4. Work with Aquatics Directors to identify program opportunities that would increase revenue and/or increase community impact.
    5. Work with Aquatics Directors to make recommendations on how to maximize program offerings in order to yield higher revenue.
    6. Monitor program registration and give statistic reports each session, month, or as requested by Association.
    7. Monitor program return on investment (ROI) to assess need and operational effectiveness.

  2. Increases innovation in aquatics by working with Association Aquatics team to determine need and priority.

  3. Increases aquatic safety and compliance for Association Aquatics.
    1. Perform Association audits
    2. Holds Centers accountable for aquatic safety guidelines and Aquatics Director as needed.
    3. Assure compliance with State, County, City and YMCA standards.
    4. Work collaboratively with the Executive Director of Aquatics Programs and Safety to provide guidance and identify opportunities for improvement.
    5. Evaluate center guard zones and work with the Executive Director of Aquatics Programs and Safety to provide guidance and identify opportunities for improvement.
    6. Ensure that all staff meet certification minimums by conducting monthly evaluations of certifications.

  4. Uses technical expertise to provide support to assigned centers and programs.
    1. Serve as the point person for all aquatics questions from Aquatics Directors.
    2. Identify safety, revenue, and operational effectiveness opportunities that align with the Association plan and communicate with the Center Aquatics Directors to implement.
      1. Review pool schedule, usage, and determine ROI in non-peak times.

    3. Assist in sharing content knowledge to aquatics leaders.
    4. Serve as the center Aquatics Director when there is a vacancy. Lifeguard at center pools when there is a significant shortage of staff.
    5. Attend and participate in 4 hours in-service per month, rotating Centers.
    6. Assist with safety and program development opportunities.
    7. Assist with Aquatics Director in-service, workshops on a needs basis.
    8. Association Day Camp Training for Directors

  5. Works with Association Aquatics quality teams to determine best practices, tools, resources, and trainings that fall within the Association strategic plan and department priorities.
    1. Provide research on safety issues and give input on standard updates.
    2. Monitor hiring progress and communicate with assigned centers to develop plan.
    3. Assist center leadership staff with interviews and give input on hiring when needed.
    4. Assist with the new Director's onboarding.
    5. Attend Association Aquatics quality team meeting and participate or Aquatics Director teams as identified by the chart of work.
    6. Identify ways to increase operational effectiveness.
    7. Cabinet Meetings

  6. Supports the YMCA of Greater Houston's Eliminating Drowning Initiative.
    1. Aquatics Director efforts to establish the YMCA as the provider of aquatics safety and quality programs.
    2. Work with AQUATICS DIRECTOR and ED to identify opportunities and grow year-round safety around water programs and work with centers to identify support and funding.
    3. G4G tracking 2 hours a week for 8 weeks
    4. Ensure training, tracking, reporting and standards are followed for safety around water (SAW) and go for green programs.
      1. Work to increase participation in SAW and Go for Green.
      2. Increase communication of program success to parents.



  • Connect Center Aquatics Director and hub providers to create program awareness.

  1. Support community events, groups, etc.

  1. Responds to all inquiries/complaints within 24 hours.
  2. Other duties as assigned.

  1. Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
  2. Five to seven years of aquatics experience in an aquatics leadership role.
  3. Minimum age requirement of 21.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain collaborations within the organization.
  5. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Completion of following training requirements: Prior to first scheduled shift: Online training for Child Abuse Prevention, Work Place Harassment & Bullying, Universal Precautions, Information Security and Awareness. Within 30 days of hire: ASHI trainings for BLS, Oxygen and First Aid.

  1. Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications: Lifeguard Certification including ASHI BLS, Oxygen and First Aid, CPO and Swim Instructor. Preferably Lifeguard Instructor and Swim Lesson Trainer.

  1. Ability to be a trainer level staff within the first 6 months of hire.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to lead, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily locally to assigned centers within the Greater Houston area during the business day. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

HOURS

Flexible with scheduling and available to work operational hours of the YMCA, which may include day, evening, weekends, and/or holidays, based on the center needs.
