| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The University of North Carolina System's Small Business and Technology Development Center (
SBTDC), in partnership with the US Small Business Administration, is recognized as the primary organization through which the state of North Carolina provides business counseling, management education, and technology development and commercialization services to help the business community successfully meet challenges, manage change, and plan for the future. |
| Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station."
The primary role of the Small Business Equity Funding Specialist is to provide individualized and confidential technology commercialization counseling services to NC businesses, entrepreneurs and university faculty. Key activities of this role include promoting the Small Business and Technology Development Center (
SBTDC) and Technology Commercialization Team throughout the state and establishing/maintaining relationships with key strategic partners involved in technology commercialization, the funding of viable technology commercialization ideas, and economic development. This position has specialized responsibilities focused on equity funding. The position will both regularly engage with clients to assist them in raising equity funding and plan / execute events that revolve around equity funding topics.

| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues. |
| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Broad, general knowledge of the principles and practices of business management, sales and finance, along with a sound understanding of all aspects of technology commercialization, and both dilutive and non-dilutive fund raising, is required. Attention to detail, strong analytical abilities, and excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills are also required. The successful candidate must have the ability to keep detailed records, handle multiple assignments, organize work, and establish priorities with minimal supervision. |
| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Familiarity with both NC and federal level technology commercialization / funding ecosystem partners is preferred. The ability to analyze and present complex financial analysis to clients is necessary. |
