| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Launched in 2013, the Department of Applied Physical Sciences (
APS) is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Including the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (
CHANL) and the graduate program in material sciences, Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serve the entire
UNC community. |
| Position Summary |
The electronics research associate will verify the design of custom analog and digital electronics for research in the area of experimental neuroscience. The initial focus is on testing a sparse array of photometers under low light conditions. The position entails working with the research team in designing, prototyping, fabrication and debugging of specialized analog and digital circuits. In addition, the research associate will design, write, and debug code for the data acquisition card, and develop and test the data logging and wireless streaming systems. Experiments will be performed at laboratories located at
UNC. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure. |
| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
The research associate must have a demonstrated ability to work on advanced circuit designs for use in leading-edge physics measurements. The position requires strong organizational skills as well as the necessary technical skills in surface mount electronics. Demonstrated experience in designing both analog and digital electronics for a variety of research functions is required, including mixed signal, RF, digitizers, optoelectronics, and low-noise circuits. The ideal candidate must also be able to troubleshoot and repair electronic equipment as needed. The research associate will be expected to work with the engineer, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows on custom electronics associated with the research program at
APS. |
| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering or a similar degree in a related field and experience in the field of electronics and in a laboratory environment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
