Job Summary - Manager Clinical Risk Mgmt

Leads a team of Clinical Risk professionals, overseeing implementation of the Clinical Risk Management program and annual Clinical Risk Workplan. Responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and policies. Supervises the Clinical Risk Specialists, Risk Analysts and other team members as assigned. Oversees the department's day to day clinical risk operations to ensure: investigation and resolution of incidents, identification of strategies to minimize risks, improvement in the quality and safety of patient care, loss control, management of claims, monitoring of risk trends, implementation of strategies to ensure proactive risk reduction measures. Partners with other Managers across QSE to ensure collaboration and success. Responsible for daily operations of team related to staffing and budgetary effectiveness. Role requires regular in person leadership presence in assigned Corewell Health delivery system locations.
Essential Functions - Manager Clinical Risk Mgmt
  • Manages the activities of Clinical Risk Specialists, Risk Analysts and other team members as assigned. Acts as a liaison between the organization and the Risk Management, Claims, Legal departments to facilitate adherence to standards, policies, rules and regulations. Implements the Risk Management Program, including assessment and evaluation of risk management strategies. Serves as a resource and special projects coordinator for the Director, Clinical Risk Management and other leadership staff as directed. Ensures availability of all reports and records for area of responsibility.
  • Serves as a consultant to the organization regarding clinical risk management issues. Provides guidance, recommendations, and resources on issues relating to standards, laws, rules, and regulations applicable to health care and treatment. Provides risk and liability consultation to management, staff and physicians for patient safety and loss control in clinical events, sentinel events and risk issues. May be asked to perform investigations at the direction of legal counsel and works with legal counsel to provide guidance, recommendations and other assistance as requested. In such cases, the team member will report directly to legal counsel as opposed to the team member's up-line leadership, and such work with legal counsel shall be confidential and protected from disclosure by the attorney client privilege and work protect protection.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, retaining employees and members of the team, monitoring performance. Develops team members, builds teams, and identifies and leverages talent across regions to foster high performing teams. Initiating when appropriate, and following through with disciplinary action and termination in consultation with Human Resources for service. Develops a team culture that encourages staff to speak up when they have concerns.
  • Works with Director, Clinical Risk Management and financial analyst to maintain department budget at appropriate level. Ensures team compliance with internal policies related to budget/expense.
  • Manages the work priorities of the department to ensure organization and department targets are achieved. Delegates the general work assignment areas for all employees and assigns special projects individually. Mentors, coaches and develops employees while being a role model and resource to them. Makes data-informed decisions.
  • Partners with Director, Clinical Risk Management to implement strategies and tactics aligned with organization and department priorities. Takes action, monitors performance and provides regular reports on effectiveness to leadership.
  • Creates and presents reports to or for the Director, Clinical Risk Management and to or for other regional/system leadership teams upon request. Under direction of the Director, Clinical Risk Management this role develops risk management education plans for required team members to enhance awareness and based on analysis of claims management reporting history, patient safety events, sentinel events, and other risk management topics.
  • Role requires frequent on-site physical presence in and regular travel to multiple locations across the assigned Corewell Health care delivery service area. Provides on-call consultations and intervention services for risk management issues and has ability to occasionally flex hours as needed.
Qualifications - Manager Clinical Risk Mgmt
  • Required Bachelor's Degree Nursing
  • Preferred Master's Degree health care-related field such as nursing, or a business related field, and 5 years recent, relevant risk management experience.
  • 5 years of relevant experience clinical nursing experience or relevant healthcare experience Required
  • 5 years of relevant experience Experience in legal field such as health care claims, health care contract development/negotiation, healthcare insurance programs and claims, health care risk management programs, patient safety, patient quality improvement programs, or nursing administration and management positions. Required
  • 3 years of relevant experience Leading others (supervisory role) Required
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan required for anyone hired after 9.1.24 preferred
  • CRT-Professional Health Risk Mgt, Certified (CPHRM) - AHA-CC American Hospital Association Certification Center Either CPHRM or CPPS Cert required. 2 Yrs required Or
  • CRT-At least one Certification from preferred list - UNKNOWN Unknown IHI Open School preferred
