Job Overview

The Coding Compliance Educator coordinates day-to-day education, training, and quality improvement functions within the Health Information Management department in support of the coding leadership team. Collaborates with Revenue Cycle leaders for training needs as required for coding specific workflow and provide consistency across revenue stream. Lead and support coding and clinical documentation educational program initiatives to meet accuracy and audit standards for reporting. Works with multiple internal and external partners at various levels of the organization to support coding, education, administrative, and training needs. Strong aptitude for quickly troubleshooting and identifying the cause of questionable results within abstracts and reports.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Presents Inpatient and/or Outpatient educational in-services to coders, physicians and/or staff. Completes any coding related web-based training or other assigned coding instruction or research. Researches Inpatient and/or Outpatient coding questions, changes in regulatory compliance, and other topics using all available resources.
  • Gathers and reviews coding, auditing, and Clinical documentation reporting for key performance indicators in support of leadership team. Encompassing but not limited to monthly Coding, CDI, and QR productivity and audit reports.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with Vendor partners including but not limited to software vendor support and external coding and auditing.
  • Creates and maintains internal departmental communication documentation.
  • Trains and educates the Inpatient and/or Outpatient coding staff on all aspects of coding. Prepares trainings and presentations on various coding topics.
  • Performs Inpatient and/or Outpatient coding audits to ensure coding accuracy compliance. Provides feedback to the coders from audits for coding quality improvement. Audits the audits performed by Quality team to ensure best practice and escalates to Coding leadership as required.
  • Provides feedback to the Inpatient and/or Outpatient coders and CDI for potential queries and as needed interacts with clinical staff for the purpose of documentation improvement and clarification.
  • Attends Revenue cycle planning sessions in support of Coding section growth and educational needs.
  • Assists with coding candidate testing facilitation and works directly with Clinical Application Support for HIM Coding training needs with software.
  • Responsible for Coding SharePoint maintenance of internal educational materials and any contract access as required.
  • Coordinates external audits and develops educational plan based on upon outcome to report to compliance.
  • Serves as Newsletter Co-Lead and coordinator for all of HIM department in Coding section project initiatives as the subject matter expert, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degrees
    • Assoc of Arts or Sciences
  • Area of Study
    • in healthcare or a related field.
  • Experience
    • Minimum Experience. Required:Five (5) years of facility coding and auditing experience assigning ICD-10 CM/PCS for inpatient DRG based accounts, and observation accounts utilizing an encoder and abstracting software.
  • Equivalency
    • Two years experience above stated requirements may substitute for associate's degree.
  • Licenses & Certifications
    • Certified Coding Specialist
    • Registered Health Information Administrator
    • Registered Health Information Technician
  • Additional Requirements
    • License/Certification required at time of hire. Requires one (1) of the following: RHIT, RHIA, or CCS.

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $66,083.89 to $99,125.84
