The Energy Marshal partners closely with Project Safety, Commissioning, Operations, and Trade Partner teams to oversee electrical safety programs, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, energization planning, and risk mitigation throughout the construction and commissioning lifecycle. This position is critical to maintaining safe operations in complex environments where utility feeds, generators, UPS systems, ATS equipment, and other electrical infrastructure are being installed, tested, and energized.

Responsibilities

Energy Management & Electrical Safety

  • Review and approve Change of Energy permits, Methods of Procedure (MOPs), and Step-by-Step (SBS) switching procedures prior to execution.
  • Coordinate energization activities with owners, utility providers, commissioning teams, operations personnel, electrical contractors, and trade partners.
  • Ensure all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures are properly developed, implemented, audited, and maintained.
  • Verify that all personnel involved in energized work are appropriately qualified, trained, and authorized.
  • Confirm controlled access procedures are established for all energized rooms, equipment, and systems.
  • Verify designated competent personnel are assigned for high-risk electrical activities, including live-dead-live testing, infrared scanning, and switching operations.
  • Maintain and validate current single-line diagrams, one-line drawings, and system documentation.
  • Ensure all commissioning, startup, switching, and energization activities meet established safety and operational requirements.
  • Track and verify completion of all required steps within approved energy isolation and energization procedures.
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments of energy management practices and training effectiveness.
  • Report and escalate deficiencies, near misses, incidents, and safety concerns to project leadership and stakeholders.

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)

  • Partner with the project EH&S manager to promote and maintain a strong safety culture.
  • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazards that may impact personnel, equipment, or project operations.
  • Support implementation of site-specific safety programs, procedures, and best practices.
  • Interpret and apply OSHA, NFPA 70E, and applicable environmental regulations.
  • Lead electrical hazard assessments, arc flash risk evaluations, and energy-related safety reviews.
  • Participate in safety orientations, pre-task planning meetings, and toolbox talks.
  • Conduct routine field inspections and safety observations.
  • Mentor project personnel and trade partners on energy safety and electrical risk management.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety events, completing root cause analyses and corrective action reports within established timelines.
  • Develop and present project safety information, lessons learned, and training materials.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience working with electrical systems on large-scale construction projects.
  • Strong background as a licensed electrician, electrical foreman, superintendent, commissioning professional, or electrical subject matter expert.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical facilities, data centers, hospitals, manufacturing plants, industrial facilities, power generation, substations, or other large MEP-intensive projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical distribution systems, commissioning processes, switching procedures, and energy isolation practices.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and administering Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E, arc flash protection, and electrical safety requirements.
  • Experience coordinating among multiple stakeholders in fast-paced construction environments.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in hyperscale data center or mission-critical construction projects.
