Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the NOAA Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) program mission-critical platform that delivers real-time weather data, forecasts, and decision-support tools to National Weather Service forecasters nationwide.

This role directly supports the operational availability, modernization, and continuous improvement of AWIPS, ensuring forecasters have reliable, high-performance systems to protect life and property.

What You'll Do:

    Support technical planning, systems integration, and verification & validation (V&V) activities for total systems.
  • Perform cost, risk, supportability, and effectiveness analysis to ensure system performance and sustainability.
  • Conduct systems analysis across the full lifecycle, including concept development, design, fabrication, testing, installation, operations, maintenance, and disposal.
  • Translate customer and product requirements into end-to-end system solutions that balance technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
  • Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, and detailed trade studies to evaluate design options.
  • Allocate requirements and define interfaces to convert customer needs into clear hardware and software specifications.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Min 8 years with BS/BA, Min 6 years with MS/MA, Min 3 years with PhD
  • 4 years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree
  • Experience supporting large-scale, distributed, or mission-critical systems.
  • Programming with MS SQLServer DB and/or Postgres DB
  • Strong working knowledge of Service Oriented architectures.
  • Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies.
  • Git and other software version control or management tools.
  • Atlassian tool suite (Jira, FishEye/Crucible, BitBucket, etc)
  • Familiarity with Linux-based environments, system monitoring, and network fundamentals.
  • Ability to participate in technical discussions, interpret requirements, and support complex system integrations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting NOAA, NWS, or other environmental or weather-focused operational systems.
  • Background with AWIPS, EDEX, Data Delivery, or national weather dissemination platforms.
  • Experience with Agile development practices and DevSecOps environments.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (Python, Bash) or automation tools (Ansible, Jenkins).
  • Experience supporting 24/7 operational systems or field-office environments.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interface directly with government stakeholders
  • Active/Current Public Trust

Target Salary Range

$135,000 - $216,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
