Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Digital Writer/Editor - Media Relations.
In this role, the successful candidate is an experienced Copyeditor/Proofreader who will join the Media Relations team within the department of Communications, Marketing, Government and Community Affairs. This role, which will be based in Manhattan and expected to be in the office 3X a week, will support teams across the department by providing copyediting/proofreading for a variety of written communications including but not limited to news releases, web/intranet stories, leadership/internal messages, social media posts, other web content, and various reports prepared by the department. The Copyeditor/Proofreader will ensure accuracy, correct grammar and language as well as a consistent style across all communications issued by the department.
Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Media Relations, this position will play an important role ensuring that internal and external communications issued by NYU Langone and its leadership are clear, accurate, grammatically correct, factually accurate and possess a consistent look and feel that is aligned with the institutions overall brand. This position will have available backup and support provided when and where needed.
The ideal candidate should have an excellent understanding of AP style and possess superior editing skills to ensure clarity and impact of language to communicate key points. This person in this role should have a proven ability to manage multiple tasks at once, effectively prioritizing, making sound recommendations, and elevating as appropriate. This position will also work with the web team to ensure that content is optimized for search engines to improve online visibility. Additionally, this person will need to work with writers at different levels to effectively and constructively make changes to their copy in a collegial and cooperative environment. This includes a willingness and ability to defer to the primary writers needs and intent for a piece of writing, while also knowing when to insist on changes, ultimately respecting the difference between copyediting and substantial content editing.
Job Responsibilities:
The Copyeditor/Proofreader will:
- Help develop and utilize a ticketing system to track, prioritize and execute requests, ensuring important and timely requests are completed first.
- Ensure continuity between related communications and elevate concerns or issues appropriately through various teams.
- Work in close coordination with other teams to ensure there is adequate coverage during vacations, sick days, or excessively busy periods that require additional copyediting/proofreading support.
- Largely rely on the authors of various communications to ensure accuracy, but also help check easily verifiable facts in those communications as an added safeguard.
- Be able to recognize the difference between substantial content edits and copyedits to ensure the primary writers intent and objectives are not compromised.
- Flag inconsistencies between multiple pieces of content that are writing on similar subjects.
- Ensure appropriate backup resources are in places where and when needed.
Operational Excellence
- Monitor outcomes and key measures of success to gauge the effectiveness of copyediting operations and adapt/evolve where needed.
- Efficiently and effectively execute goals and priorities while adhering to organizational standards for delivering excellent work.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, or related field.
5 or more years of experience in copy-editing, proofreading and fact checking in deadline-driven environments.
Experience in digital editing and platforms including MS Word and PowerPoint.
Experienced writer, editor, and verbal communicator; strong medical writing experience.
Comfortable with digital content channels, including but not limited to social media.
Familiarity with web publishing.
Highly organized and ability to develop and work with systems and processes to ensure accountability and effective tracking of multiple projects.
Seamless ability to triage work based on multiple deadlines, priorities and stakeholders at various levels.
Experience elevating important matters effectively to the senior director and others in the organization as appropriate.
Ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in health care, journalism or higher education setting.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $81,325.15 - $140,285.70 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
