We are seeking a highly experienced and technically driven Senior Substation Project Engineer to lead and support the engineering and design of medium to high-voltage substations (13kV-500kV). This is a key technical leadership role, where you'll take ownership of electrical and physical substation design, oversee project execution, and collaborate closely with clients, vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in substation design, project engineering, and engineering team coordination - playing a critical role in delivering safe, innovative, and cost-effective solutions for utility, renewable, and industrial clients.

Your Responsibilities will Include:

Lead the design of substation systems including:
    • Physical layout plans, sections, and details
    • One-line and three-line diagrams
    • AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams
    • Control house layouts and panel arrangements
    • Grounding and lightning protection systems
    • Cable routing and conduit plans
    • Equipment specifications and bill of materials
  • Conduct and review engineering studies including:
    • Grounding, short-circuit, load flow, and voltage drop
    • Lightning protection analysis
    • AC/DC station service and battery sizing
  • Oversee development of technical deliverables: specifications, calculations, reports, construction drawings, and procurement packages
  • Ensure compliance with client standards and applicable codes (IEEE, NESC, NEC, ANSI, NEMA, IEC)

Project Leadership

  • Act as Project Engineer Lead, managing design teams and coordination with internal disciplines (Civil, Structural, P&C, physical, communications, settings)
  • Develop and manage scope of work, schedules, cost estimates, and project milestones
  • Perform and lead QA/QC reviews on engineering deliverables
  • Serve as a technical liaison to clients, vendors, and field staff throughout project lifecycle

Field & Construction Support

  • Support construction with RFI responses, design clarifications, and field troubleshooting
  • Perform site visits for scoping, construction coordination, and post-construction inspections

Mentorship & Collaboration

  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, promoting knowledge transfer and technical growth
  • Foster strong communication across engineering teams, project managers, and external stakeholders

Education & Years of Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited)
  • 8+ years of experience in substation design engineering, with demonstrated leadership on utility-scale projects
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required

To Thrive in This Role, You Will Need:

  • High voltage (15kV-500kV) substation design
  • Grounding and lightning protection studies
  • Physical and/or protection & controls layouts
  • Substation equipment and vendor coordination
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent design software
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and documentation skills
  • Ability to lead technical teams and collaborate across disciplines
  • Experience with relay settings, SCADA integration, and protection philosophies
  • Familiarity with power system modeling and analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, CYME, SKM)
  • Knowledge of 3D substation modeling or BIM processes is a plus
  • Experience supporting substation construction, commissioning, or field troubleshooting
  • Previous experience working with utilities, EPCs, or regional ISOs
