About the Job

Summary of Position
Perform and troubleshoot experiments and analyze data in a molecular biology and protein biochemistry / protein engineering laboratory. Maintain detailed scientific records. Collaborate with the Research Team Scientists to meet Laboratory Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).

Perform all activities with minimal supervision (weekly meetings with supervisor to review progress but day to day activities performed independently) in accordance with standard operating procedures. Maintain all associated laboratory equipment and facilities for the continued performance of these duties.

30% Molecular Biology and Cell Culture
Execute and troubleshoot complex molecular biology work flows including Gibson assembly-based sub-cloning and multi-fragment assembly, PCR, Sanger sequencing of plasmids, designing cloning strategies, phage-display and yeast-display-based molecular engineering.

Perform all activities with minimal supervision (weekly meetings with supervisor to review progress but day to day activities performed independently) in accordance with standard operating procedures. Maintain all associated laboratory equipment and facilities for the continued performance of these duties.

30% Protein biochemical and biophysical assays
Execute and troubleshoot complex protein purification work flows affinity purification of recombinant proteins, size-exclusion chromatography of recombinant proteins, and ion-exchange chromatography of recombinant proteins. Validate protein identity by mass-spectrometry and perform functional assays on purified proteins including (for example) enzyme-activity assays, protein-ligand binding assays, and stopped-flow-based measurements of biochemical reaction kinetics.

Perform all activities with minimal supervision (weekly meetings with supervisor to review progress but day to day activities performed independently) in accordance with standard operating procedures. Maintain all associated laboratory equipment and facilities for the continued performance of these duties.

30% Recombinant Protein Expression and Purification
Perform cell culture, developing, maintaining, and validating cell lines and strains including maintaining and culturing HEK cells in a dedicated BSL2 cell culture facility.

Perform all activities with minimal supervision (weekly meetings with supervisor to review progress but day to day activities performed independently) in accordance with standard operating procedures. Maintain all associated laboratory equipment and facilities for the continued performance of these duties.

10% General Laboratory Maintenance
Maintain laboratory notebooks, laboratory records and databases, and lead or assist in general laboratory maintenance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
BA/BS and 1 year of related experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal five years in any of the following areas: Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, or related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS and 1 year of related experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years in Molecular Biology, Mammalian Cell culture, or Protein expression and purification experience.

The department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics is committed to understanding the molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases and cancer; developing novel strategies in biocatalysis and biotechnology; and advancing knowledge through structural biology and molecular biophysics. We organize ourselves into research divisions with emphases on Chemical and Structural Biology, Metabolic and Systems Biology, Molecular Biology and Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology. We are housed in new buildings with state-of-the-art research and support facilities.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: 20.11 - 21.64/hourly; depending on education/qualifications/experience
