POSITION TITLE: YOUTH SPORTS COACH- BASKETBALL

DEPARTMENT: HELENA CORPS

STATUS: ON-CALL/SEASONAL/NON-EXEMPT

SUPERVISOR: GYM/EMERGENCY DISASTER SERVICES DIRECTOR

SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Youth Program Coach reports to the Athletic Director and is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the youth sports team. Managing the youth team and volunteers. Maintaining contact with parents, team and volunteers of practices and game times. Coaching the youth to develop better skills in their sport, as well as a good team player.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Work a non-standard work week generally in accordance with The Salvation Army athletic programs, tournaments, gym rentals or events.
  • Represent The Salvation Army upholding it's standards at all times
  • Work with the Athletic Director in planning snacks, prayer, and use of the gym for the team.
  • Keep team stats for individual players
  • Interface with the youth's parents as the coach of the team
  • Manage team sports equipment and keep it in useable order and or notify the athletic director of needed replacements or repairs
  • Answer incoming phone calls and process mail accordingly
  • Maintain Department Logs and Stats
  • Maintain and update contact information for the team
  • Generate reports of attendance stats
  • Prepare and distribute practice schedules
  • Coordinate with the athletic director arrival/leave times for players for both home and away games
  • Assist in making sure the bus is clean after road trips
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance to the job description.
  • Drive non-CDL multi-passenger van or mini-bus



EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:



  • Minimum High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Minimum of professional or volunteer experience working with young adults and community members
  • Basketball Coach and/or player experience
  • Organizational experience preferred



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:



  • Must have sport specific knowledge for sport coaching
  • Detail oriented and attention to detail

  • Strong use of the English language in verbal and written communication
  • Excellent telephone skills
  • Coaching, athletics & leadership skills needed
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure

  • Ability and willingness to keep information confidential
  • Ability to set priorities and accept responsibility willingly
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to recruit, lead and empower youth team and volunteers
  • Must have a valid Montana State driver's license
  • Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and guidelines, including the ability to pass a TSA background check.
  • Must cooperate with The Salvation Army policies and procedures



SOFTWARE-RELATED SKILLS:



  • Microsoft Word and Excel helpful
  • Microsoft PowerPoint, helpful
  • Working knowledge of integrated database applications with basic training
  • Ability to use new software programs and team text communication with basic training.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Ability to operate telephone
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs
  • Ability to understand written information

Working Conditions:

Work is performed primarily in a gymnasium environment, which will be noisy and involve physical activity. Work will also include travel to and from away games, so will include time driving a vehicle and in external facilities.

The Salvation Army reserves the right to reassign, review the job or to require that different or additional tasks be performed based on the organization's need or when circumstances change.

Work Schedule / Location:

Work schedule will vary. There will be some regular hours for scheduled practices, but hours will vary when traveling for away games. Location will vary depending on game schedule.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums ($34.62) for employee only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside of a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance offered starting at $2.31 bi-weekly cost. Employees are covered by an employer paid life insurance policy. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at 5 years eligible service time, employee funded voluntary 403(b) options

Parental Leave: Benefit will be one week (5 business days) of paid leave at the employee's normal rate of pay for births, adoptions and foster placements.

Sick Leave: 12 days annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after 3 months' service time.

Paid Vacation: 2 weeks annually accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions. 4 weeks annually accruing from day one, for exempt positions. Accrued vacation eligible for use after 6 months' service time.

Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year
