Job Description

Located in Kent Washington, Protective Coatings Inc. is a leading provider of full service finishing for the aerospace, electronics and medical industries in both commercial and defense applications. Services include but are not limited to non-destructive testing such as fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection and a wide variety of surface enhancement processes such as shot peening and abrasive blasting, passivation, cadmium and nickel zinc plating, chromic, sulfuric and boric sulfuric acid anodizing and the application of chromate conversion coating on ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Organic coating includes the application and testing of multiple resin systems such as epoxies, phenolics, polyurethanes, polyesters, elastomerics, intumescents, lacquers, alkyds, acrylics, dry-film lubricants, powder coatings and Teflon. Current approvals include the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, (NADCAP), Boeing Commercial Aircraft Company, Boeing Defense and Space, Boeing/Philadelphia, Boeing Long Beach, Grumman, Gulfstream, Lockheed Martin, Goodrich, Bombardier, Cessna and Sikorsky among much else.

Founded in 1976, Protective Coatings Inc. was later acquired by Precision Castparts in 2012, and became part of the Aerostructures Division.

Position Summary:

Selected candidates for a Paint Masker Level 3 will perform a variety of complex masking duties which require meticulous attention to detail, covering certain features of a part (such as critical tolerance surfaces, threads and splines, measured surface areas, etc.) to protect those surfaces from coating or processing applications. Level 3 Paint Maskers will require some experience in reading advanced aerospace blueprints, and will be expected to assist in set up and help provide guidance to lower level paint maskers of masking samples and techniques. The Level 3 Paint Masker will perform masking activities by reviewing the shop traveler to determine the operational requirements and verification of completion of previous operations. Other responsibilities will include maintaining a clean and organized work area, as well as adherence to organization safety rules and regulations. Level 3 Paint Maskers will also be performing verifications ensuring that all traces of organic soils, fingerprints, dirt and dust etc. are removed by using solvent cleaners. Candidates must be self-disciplined and self-motivated individuals with strong accountability (attention to details) skills. Candidates must have the ability and desire to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced production environment, be resourceful and innovative along with presenting a strong business ethic and compliance to leadership and company policies, and a good communicator with the ability to represent the company in a positive manner.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Understand, adhere, and demonstrate to the company's commitment to quality and
  • Maintaining regular and punctual attendance according to shift-times or a pre-arranged work schedule.
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Wears and maintains proper personal equipment (PPE).
  • Interpret masking and finish processing requirements through reading of aerospace blueprints and customer contract notations.
  • Provide set up samples of masked parts and instruction to lower level employees.
  • Perform complex masking jobs that require meticulous detail and attention to meet blueprint dimensional requirements.
  • Measure and verify features of parts having critical dimensional tolerances utilizing calipers, scales, or rulers.
  • Cut or tear paper, tape, vinyl plugs to specified size as required per job specification.
  • Use precut masking materials and stencils for proper masking of part surfaces prior to finishes applied.
  • Proper use of masking tools such as razor blades, wire cutters, insertion tools, plier, etc.
  • Read the work order instructions from traveler or other job related documents and process the jobs exactly as instructed.
  • Physically working with hands to accurately mask certain surfaces of parts to protect from the finish process applied utilizing tapes or other masking materials.
  • Working with and around solvent cleaners and paint materials such as acetone, alcohol, MEK, paints, etc.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area at all the times.
  • Work independently or as a team member as required by job.
  • Working in fast paced environment to meet Production and Quality goals.
  • Read and verify customer contract (purchase order) for masking clarification purposes.

  • Basic computers skills involving scanning work orders and looking up technique sheets.
  • Ability to perform basic math (add, subtract, multiply, & divide).
  • Ability to interpret advanced aerospace blueprint drawings (identifying and interpreting flagnotes and finish codes, rotational views, dimensions and tolerances, etc.).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of masking materials, and the ability to use materials appropriately.
  • Ability to use and train others to use measuring equipment such as calipers, scales, rulers.
  • Ability to train other employees in masking techniques.
  • Observational skills -ability to identify and fix masking issues.
  • Must be able to perform basic in process inspection duties as required.
  • Although not required, knowledge of operating Die-Cut machine is desirable.

Required Experience:

  • 3 year minimum.

Level of Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Shift:

  • Sunday through Thursday from 10pm to 6:30am

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $20 to $28 US Dollar (USD) Hourly based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 1X the Company's bonus multiple, based on the Company's performance in the applicable quarter . Employees will receive 120 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate in the company's medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Company's 401(k) plan.
