Summary

  • This is a single incumbent position.


  • The Consulting Health Physicist provides consultation and technical expertise on highly complex and critical technical issues in Health Physics which supports the business needs of the station and ensures compliance with regulatory and license commitments.


  • Provides independent oversight over site Radiation Protection (RP) Programs (e.g., Radioactive Material Control and Shipment, Radiological Effluent Monitoring, ALARA, Environmental, Dosimetry, RP Instrumentation and RP Operations).


  • Considered an Industry expert and serves on sub-committees to develop sound technical guidance to the Industry based on scientific research and technical studies.


  • May be called upon to give presentations on technical positions and papers to Industry peers.

Minimum Requirements

  • A four-year Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or a Physical Sciences discipline from an accredited college or university plus 14 years in radiation protection positions.


  • American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification.


  • In lieu of a bachelors degree, combination of college coursework and/or experience in radiation protection positions equaling 18 years.


  • Doctorate degree with an emphasis in Health Physics may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.


  • Master's degree with an emphasis in Health Physics may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.


  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) certification may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.


  • (Meets or exceeds minimum education and experience requirements per Palo Verde Procedure 01DP-0EM08, Appendix A.)



*All candidates for this position must be reviewed and approved by the Palo Verde Plant Manager.



Nuclear Requirement:


Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.



Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage.



This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities.

Major Accountabilities

  • Develops programs to meet the challenges and complexities of regulatory compliance and technical bias.


  • Provides a high level of technical experience and independent oversight over site RP Programs including Radioactive Material Control and Shipment, Radiological Effluent Monitoring, ALARA, Environmental, Dosimetry, RP Instrumentation and RP Operations.


  • Evaluates compliance with Federal and State regulations and industry standards regarding health physics and radiation protection activities.


  • Provides expert technical assistance to internal and external customers regarding health physics and radiation protection concerns.


  • Provides timely, practical, safe and technical sound solutions when necessary to maintain plant operations.


  • Leverages industry and organization resources where available.


  • Develops a path forward to address issues including bridging strategies.


  • May interface with outside agencies and regulatory authorities.


  • Provides consultation on highly complex and unique technical issues and problems which lack health physics precedent and require the application of advanced health physics principles.


  • Develops and implements unique solutions and applications that typically require original and creative approaches and where no industry operating experience is available.


  • Makes decisions and recommendations that have a moderate to significant impact on the overall organization performance.


  • Performs radiological engineering calculations and complex radiological engineering studies.


  • Provides in-depth analyses of the health physics aspects of the nuclear generating station (e.g., neutron spectral measurements and dose rates, internal bioassay analyses, external exposure evaluations).


  • Makes regulatory interpretations and technical decisions.


  • Presents to management as well as regulatory oversight agencies.


  • Designs and conducts independent radiological research to investigate and validate technical bases used within RP Programs.


  • Evaluates emerging technologies and develops strategies to incorporate those technologies for enhancing the radiological performance at Palo Verde.


  • Prepares technical white papers.


  • Provides technical guidance, mentoring and training to improve the overall technical competency of the Radiological Engineering group.


  • Participates in professional organizations and industry sub-committees to develop sound technical guidance based on scientific research and technical studies.


  • May prepare and deliver presentations or technical positions/papers to industry peers.


  • Benchmarks, reviews and monitors industry changes.


  • Provides project oversight and management to ensure quality solutions that are technically sound and in compliance with established standards and regulations.


  • Assists in the development of Emergency Response dose assessment scenarios.


  • Provides complex calculations and evaluations in support of the Palo Verde Emergency Plan and the dose assessment program.

Hybrid:Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.



  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
  • Role types are subject to change based on business need.



Any PVGS employees may be called upon for random Fitness for Duty (FFD) testing during scheduled working hours. Employees, if off-site, must report to FFD at Palo Verde as soon as reasonably practicable, but no more than 120 minutes after being notified. Employees who are onsite when notified will have no more than 60 minutes to report after being notified.
