Position Highlights

The Biomedical Imaging Innovation/Clinical Translation - Next-gen CT (BIG-CT) research laboratory in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ is seeking candidates for an open Postdoctoral Research Associate position to train/work under the direction of Drs. Srinivasan Vedantham and Hsin Wu Tseng. The BIG-CT research laboratory is focused on design and development of X-ray based imaging systems, imaging techniques, image processing, and image analysis, with an emphasis on clinical translation. The successful candidate will assume an important role in many of the laboratory functions that are funded by NIH/NCI research projects. The Postdoctoral Research Associate may be required to travel to other sites to perform collaborative research and to attend conferences and meetings, and may be required to work with potentially hazardous materials such as toxic chemicals, radiation, and/or disease-causing organisms.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Participate in
    research on the development of X-ray based imaging systems and X-ray based
    imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and x-ray phase
    contrast imaging (PCI).
  • Perform
    laboratory duties such as setting up instruments, perform calibrations and
    acquire data.
  • Participate in
    the development of protocols for clinical translational studies.
  • Programming and
    testing of software algorithms and routines for image reconstruction,
    image quality assessment, radiation dose estimation, image
    processing/segmentation, and image analysis.
  • Empirical
    evaluations of X-ray based imaging systems and techniques.
  • Interact with
    collaborators from other institutions and organizations.
  • Train students
    and staff to perform research related methods and evaluations.
  • Collaborate in preparation of manuscripts for
    publications, presentations at conferences, and for grant applications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of x-ray imaging systems and methods.
  • Abilities in technical writing and scientific communication.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or related field.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer programming experience with MATLAB or IDL, C/C++, and Python.
  • Experience with integrating components such motion control stages, x-ray generator and detector. -Experience with GEANT4 or similar Monte Carlo modeling toolkit.
  • Experience with implementing computational neural network (CNN) architecture.
  • Experience in image reconstruction for tomographic x-ray imaging.
  • Experience in image processing and segmentation.
  • Experience with performing empirical evaluations such as modulation transfer function and noise power spectrum measurements.
  • History of peer-reviewed publications.
