Inside Machinist

1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)

The Inside Machinist is responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications, safety, with the highest quality, in a professional manner. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.

   1. Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent plus 5 (five) years minimum directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
   2. Must meet all Journeyman Inside Machinist requirements.

   1. Sets up and operates conventional and special-purpose machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units with little to no supervision.

   1. Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders and shapers.

   1. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.

   1. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

   1. Verifies conformance or finished work piece to specifications using precision measuring instruments.

   1. Set up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings.

   1. Fits and assemble parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools and power tools.

   1. Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.

   1. May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.

   1. Indepth knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials and layout techniques.

   1. Blueprint reading, sketches, drawing, manuals, specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.

   1. Measures, marks, scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
   
   
   
   

1. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. VISUAL REQUIREMENTS

Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the job is at or within arm's reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades' tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.

Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis. Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.

1. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Inside Machine Shop Foreman / General Foreman.

1. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists in machining and assembly of components in accordance with drawings, specifications and meet Navy standard requirements, with little to no supervision
2. Ensure that WAF ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished. Must ensure that no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
3. Ensure that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (ex., special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc.)
4. Ensure that you are trained for qualified for the work you are assigned to do (ex., JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs, etc.)
5. Ensure that you and personnel working under your direction are working safely and as productively as possible, maintaining quality control at all times
6. Ensure that job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure
7. Ability to complete assignment with little to no direction of supervision.

Accountable to the Inside Machine Shop Foreman / General Foreman

1. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, and work in tanks and confined spaces. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment. Must be able to work evening and weekend hours. May require up to 30% travel.
