About the Role

The Senior Counsel - Logistics will provide transactional legal advice and support to internal groups within Matson Logistics, under the general direction and supervision of an Assistant General Counsel. This person will assist a broad range of in-house legal work, with a primary focus on commercial contracts and issues impacting domestic commerce and global supply chains.

This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the office and two days remote.

What you'll do:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of legal documents, including complex logistics agreements pertaining to transportation management and warehousing operations, leases, and technology services contracts.
  • Provide comprehensive legal guidance to business leaders within Matson Logistics, an asset-light, technology-enabled logistics provider, including advising on contract interpretation and risk mitigation.
  • Conduct legal research on a wide variety of matters impacting domestic and global transportation logistics and trade and maintain and share such expertise.
  • Identify legal issues and potential complications; develop innovative and alternative solutions.
  • Manage outside counsel in litigation and disputes.
  • Work with other Matson attorneys as needed to advise internal business teams on employment, litigation, and claims issues.
  • Represent Matson to customers, suppliers, and agencies; resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You have these skills:

  • This position requires the ability to quickly pivot and shift priorities when required.
  • Ability to think critically about complex legal documents and matters at all phases of the legal process.
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor and focus on objectives during in depth negotiations.
  • Clearly articulate ideas, opinions, and information, in spoken and written form.
  • Able to work effectively in collaboration with others, or with limited supervision, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Close attention to detail and excellent drafting skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive issues with maturity and professionalism.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that foster working relationships, and the ability to work effectively with employees at all levels.
  • Experience in the transportation / shipping industry is a plus but not required.

And these qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree from a top law school.
  • Admitted to the California bar and in good standing.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of transactional law experience obtained in a law firm or in-house counsel position.

The annual salary range is posted for this position in California. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
