Summary:

The current responsibilities are performing a variety of complex duties in support of reimbursement from patients and insurance carriers throughout the revenue cycle, from pre-service with prior authorizations and insurance verification to post-service with billing, follow-up, and collections. Requires substantial knowledge of all carrier policies, procedures, and practices necessary to collect carrier accounts receivable and resolve denials. Perform all duties in a manner that promotes teamwork and reflects UNC Health Care's mission and philosophy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create pre-service cost estimates from work queues and track data related to insurance benefits and cost estimates for services. Work is productivity-based.
  • Interact with payors, registration, financial navigation, and other system departments. This position requires critical thinking, flexibility, attention to detail, accountability, and teamwork.
  • There is an opportunity for growth within the team, which includes project work such as auditing, presentations, and training.
  • Document and explain benefit breakdowns and out-of-pocket costs for patient understanding

Position Details:

  • Remote position, including training
  • Training hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM
  • Flexible schedules available after training and ramp-up are complete
  • Requires strong critical thinking, flexibility, attention to detail, accountability, and teamwork
  • Preferred experience with HB and PB billing, insurance benefits, claims processing, and communication with patients and departments

Education Requirements:
* High school diploma or GED.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* No licensure or certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Two (2) years of experience in Hospital or Physician Insurance related activities (Authorization, Billing, Follow-Up, Call-Center, or Collections).
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
* Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
* Excellent listening skills, and organizational skills.
* Advanced knowledge of UB-04, HCFA-1500's and Explanation of Benefits (EOB) interpretation.
* Intermediate knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 codes.
* Advanced knowledge of insurance billing, collections and insurance terminology.
* Ability to work in fast-paced environment and prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
* Healthcare terminology.
* Customer Service skills.
* Computer knowledge: MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
* Knowledge of 3rd party reimbursements from insurance companies and government payers is a plus.
