Health Physicist

The Health Physicist participates in developing, implementing, and overseeing the radiation protection program involving radioactive materials, x-ray devices, and/or non-ionizing radiation, including lasers, and, where applicable, performs duties that support goals and objectives to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction. Working under direct supervision, this position supports that experimental work, equipment, design, or medical procedures conform to radiation safety standards for protection of hospital personnel, patients, and the environment.


With direct supervision, performs routine audits of radioisotope, sealed source, analytical x-ray, and laser user facilities.
Collects, handles, and transports radioactive waste material, including the preparation of such material for shipment, burial, incineration, or storage.
Assists in inventories of all radioactive material received by or transferred from the hospital.
Under direct supervision, performs sealed source leak tests. Assists with calibration and maintenance of radiological monitoring and analytical equipment.
Provides basic advice to staff regarding radiation safety policies, programs, and regulatory compliance.
Assists with the radiation dosimetry program.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree in physics, health physics, medical health physics, or a closely related science, engineering, or legal discipline OR associate degree in a radiological science discipline with 10 years of clinical imaging experience
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in health physics or medical health physics

EXPERIENCE:
Required: 1 year of experience in health physics, medical physics, or related radiological program in a university or clinical setting

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
Preferred: Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer, Registered Radiation Protection Technologist; Valid Driver's License (if driving a Cone Health vehicle, must have 5 years of driving experience and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be approved by Risk Management)
